New Pelican – “An Inch Above Sand” (Stereogum Premiere)

Pelican’s fourth full-length What We All Come To Need is their first for Southern Lord (after the Ephemeral EP), though there clearly weren’t any hard feelings with their old label: Hydra Head owner/Isis frontman Aaron Turner contributes to the collection. Across its eight tracks, the hardworking L.A.-via-Chicago quartet also gets help from Southern Lord main man, Sunn O)))’s Greg Anderson, along with Ben Verellen (Helms Alee, ex-Harkonen) and the Life & Times/ex-Shiner player Allen Epley, who adds vocals (yes, vocals) to closer “Final Breath.” Even with the extra hands/unexpected vocal cords, you’re getting what you’d expect from the band — dynamically expansive, mathy, triumphant, and lightly melancholic guitar-powered post-metal — though in a denser, more varied form than in the past. Check out the sludgy, slow-release “An Inch Above Sand.”
