GOING TO THE ROCK SHOW!! I’ve always been a pretty big concert goer since my first “concert” (don’t judge: The Bay City Rollers). By 1993, living in Manhattan, working and single, I had plenty of spare time and opportunity to see a lot of shows. A lot of new and even undiscovered talent played in smaller venues. Tickets were cheaper than they were now. And there wasn’t the internet. Sure, Ticketmaster had become an all controlling turd on the concert scene, but you could still go to a lot of shows by standing in-line at the box office getting the best seats (if it weren’t general admission) or you could scalp easily without worrying too much about fake tickets (It did happen but rarely). And 1993 was certainly the height of my concert going life. At least 1 to 2 a week on average. Even travelled to several states, Canada and the UK to listen to live music. November 1993 was especially prolific as a calendar month. I was newly out of a relationship, and I saw everyone I could (while still maintaining a full-time job). I still have the journal that I wrote down the events. Tuesday Nov 2: Rod Stewart – very hot off his MTV Unplugged event Nov 3: David Byrne Nov 4 Rage Against the Machine Mazzy Star Nov 5 Nov 6 Green Day (Before DOOKIE) Tuesday Nov 9 Matthew Sweet– drove out to New Haven, CT. 6 of us in the subcompact 1985 Honda Civic. Felt like there was more of us on the way home. Nov 10 Garth Brooks – no one else want to go, managed to scalp a 10th row for $50 out on Long Island. Garth literally flew over my head on a rope. Nov 11 The Cranberries– we were up against the stage on 34th street. The band was no more than 4-6 feet from us. I’m saying Dolores did not wear any “knickers”. Nov 12 Counting Crows and Cracker double bill– Two of my friends broke up at this show. For “good this time”. To be honest, I was tired for this one. 4 weekday nights in a row. Thankfully this was a Friday. Got time to rest and gear up for… The BIG SHOW… Monday Nov 15th at the Roseland, The Breeders opening for: NIRVANA. Absolutely one of the most memorable shows of my life. Being in the area in front of the stage was like being near a black hole: All of the gravity pulled you closer towards the stage and crushing your body. The pressure near Krist and Pat Smears (on the right side) was nowhere as strong as near Kurt. In fact, you could only stand the G-forces so long near Kurt, before you had to struggle back to relative safety near Pat. It is also the one and only time in my life I body surfed (knowing the crowd was so thick there was no way they could drop you or you could fall). How was the show?…How do you think it was? LOL It was brilliant. It was quite the work-out too. Afterwards we had to wring out the clothes we were wearing because of the sweat. It also took a couple of washes to get out the Body Odor. However, I still have the tour T-shirt. It’s iconic. Just like the band. Epilogue..3 days later…We tried to get into the MTV Unplugged show for Nirvana, the 18th. Basically, you really REALLY had to know someone at MTV to be invited in. We didn’t :( Nov 19 Afghan Whigs Nov 20 Tribe Called Quest– another drive to Connecticut in a Chevy. This time just 5 of us (remember the break-up on Nov 12th?) and more car room. It was a college show, and one of my friends meets someone there. They eventually get engaged a few years later, though it doesn’t stick. Thanksgiving Weekend..Nov. 26th a friend drags me to see Uriah Heep, Nazareth and Blue Oyster Cult… Nov 29 Neil Diamond– scalped at MSG. He put on a great show. All of his hits plus a lot of Christmas seasonal tunes. Nov 30 Robert Plant– ends with “Whole Lotta Love” which turns out was the first solo tour he had sung it. These 15 shows in 30 days are the most I’ve ever done in a month. I got to see some of my all-time favorite artists, it was a blessing. Thanks for reading. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6PTI0Gh5zU

Putting aside that 1950s Elvis is untouchable...(there's still filler in the albums but the hits are THE HITS and lots of other greatness there) The early 1960s hits are still excellent and enjoyable, if not pure Rock n Roll and less sincere swagger "Stuck On You" "It's Now or Never" "A mess of Blues" "are you lonesome tonight" "GI Blues" "Surrender" "I Feel so bad" "Marie's the Name" "can't help falling love" "Good luck Charm", "She's Not You" "Return to sender", "Devil in Disguise", "Bossa Nova Baby" and a killer song "Such a night" It's the stuff from 1964-1967 that's death for elvis fans like myself. 1968 began with another golden era, "guitar man" "A little less conversation", "Memories", "If I can dream", "in the ghetto", "Suspicious minds" "Don't cry daddy" "kentucky rain", "The wonder of you" ...
Elvis is the King for a reason pure magic. Often imitated, often parodied, often inspired by...but just him. He didn't write any songs, but he pretty much produced most of them. He knew what he wanted, and he knew how he wanted them to sound. Didn't always succeed but when he did...
no offense to John Candy (in Home Alone)...Bobby Vinton is the polka king.
38X is a lot especially for someone like Sting who doesn't tour extensively. I've seen him 5 times. But haven't seen him since the 90s.
the "rhyming" thing is something someone point out to be at the time and my mind was blown. there is one rhyme at the very end...but it's just a conversation and it's so subtle that it's just a really effective, entertaining song that is really clever without seeming so.
we loved this album. We just to make up the words to Cannonball since there are spots we didn't understand... ("Fuck you, what you, who you, Cannonball" "Bowling Pins, Pirate Grins Cannonball", "Angry noise, we hate boys, Cannonball") Got a chance to see the Breeders in the fall of 93 (they opened up for another very big artist). they did not disappoint. Miss those days..
Today's #1 is a 3 or 4. Not a UB40 fan...and it hurts in the comparison with Elvis' 10. Sunshine is a fun song. not quite a 10 for me. it's a 7 or 8 on a partly sunny day. Just and Old Fashioned Love song, like nEVER been to spain, is just great 3DN.
Tom obviously has a dividing line of the Beatles...it's a 1966. of the 12 #1s, he gave 3 of them 10s, 3 of them 9s, 4 of them 8s, 2 of them 7s (Yesterday??) which means 1964-1966 averaged 8.58 The TNOCS average for those 12 songs are: 8.4. That's statistically similar. (certainly impossible for TNOCS to have a perfect 10 on any song, and there are always the anonymous weirdos that will give any song a "1" and not state why) 1967-1970 Tom changes of the 8 songs, he give a 3, a 4, a 5, a 6, 2 7s and 2 8s. for an average of 6. TNCOS average of these 8 songs is 7.9... ~2 points higher than 2. Which is exactly what you were saying ozmoe I like to say you can add +3 to any Tom review of the Beatles (and their solo or Beatlesque songs from others)...certainly based on Hey Jude and Yesterday. BTW...Tom's Beatles average is 7.55 TNOCS is 8.2 One and One and One is 3 (or +3) lol
i added My sister again because it's so fun.

that's the way I took it too irishbeartx. Sister is older and she went to college, or moved away, or got married etc. Actually, NOW THAT I THINK ABOUT IT... This would be the younger sister's (Juliana) toast at the big Sister's wedding. Hey, i hate My sister...she's such a bitch. Haha. Woo hoo... (everyone laughs) no seriously, I would do anything to let her know I care, i love her, she's the best. She's cooler than any other girl that I have ever met. She had the greatest band, she's now married to the greatest guy. She's good at everything and doesn't even try. Let me tell you about when she was going to take me to my first All-ages show...
Ah, but the sister DIDN'T take her. I miss my sister, why'd she go ? She's the one who would have taken me To my first all-ages show. It was the violent femmes and the del fuegos, before they had a record out. Before they went gold, and started to grow. yeah the sister is a bitch! LOL
Link, i always love your background info on all of these 50 and 75 year old ditties.
all types of music hit the charts in the 60s and 70s. it was a wide range of music hitting #1
This is a great criteria for polls. Those 2 #41s from the 1970s are definitely classics and can still be heard today on the radio.
i don't think so at all. The sad thing about the #1s are they are bland. Tons of ballads have topped the charts in the soundscan era...and many are boring ones With so much great and ever changing music occurring in the country, rap, hip hop, alternative, rock genres it's very sad none of it made it to the top of the pops. these pop songs will each stay at #1 for a while but there's something very wrong about it.
today's is definitely a top notch bunch of songs.
Ten Summoner's Tale is my personal favorite Sting solo album.
She loves you has one flaw. It' was recorded on 2 tracks and it deserves to be fuller and bolder.
yeah...no more Beatles, and goodbye to most of the truly great 60s #1s. The early 1960s is like 1993-1994 period... meh. I gave WEAK a 4. It's unmemorable. Nothing interesting about it. With SO MUCH great music all around at this time, the fact that these kind of blandness was hitting the tops is very sad.
Billy said (at the time) that he had said all he wanted to say in pop music. At the time, i thought it was odd...c'mon Billy, you have nothing else to say or feel that you'd want to share. 30 years later...I guess not Glad he still performs and entertains but he must've been writing all these years. The creative faucet/the muse doesn't just close permanently, does it?
I will sum up 1993's (and 1994) #1s - "meh"

Adamin, there is another version of "As Time Goes By". Its by Jimmy Durante. This version is the opening song of a future virtual #1 album, "Sleepless in Seattle" soundtrack.
i never understood why artists allow spotify, apple, amazon, etc etc to play their music for nothing. It's why all of these artists like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, etc have sold their catalogs off. They know they are getting nothing for them now. Only live shows help them with any money. Platforms such as Spotify, Tidal, Apple Music, Amazon Music and Deezer don’t have a fixed “pay-per-stream” rate. Instead, there are a variety of different payouts systems (800 systems for Spotify only). The rate depends on variables such as: The listener’s country/territory Whether the listener uses the freemium, ad-supported version or the paid, subscription model Promotional stream Distributor/label negotiated rate Pricing/Currency/Inflation in each territory When taking all of these factors into consideration, we can conclude that all streams are equal, but some are more equal than others. That being said, artists need to take other elements into consideration, instead of cutting DSPs out completely. When comparing it to the pre-DSP era, 1 million streams on an album was actually equivalent to approximately 1000 album sales, which wouldn’t make an artist a star in the pre-DSP era. While more and more artists are reaching 1 million streams, a lot of them are using these numbers and insights in their favor by actually targeting certain geographical areas and making the most of these statistics when approaching industry people. Furthermore, by bypassing the expenses that are associated with physical releases, independent artists can make more money by eliminating extortionate costs. 1.5 million premium streams on Spotify on an album that’s released independently is approximately $5,700 in terms of 1000 physical album sales, which isn’t a lot, especially if you need to recoup expenses. Therefore, if you’re an independent artist, DSP streaming often works out in your favour, as there are no label or publisher cuts in the mix. A ton of music blogs and industry players have tried to calculate the exact figures. According to Forbes, “for 1 million plays of a song, artists receive roughly the following payout from these streaming services: Amazon Music $5,000; Apple Music $5,000-$5,500; Google Play $12,000; Pandora $1,400; YouTube $1,700.” And Spotify? Roughly $3000-$6000 (4.5 cents per stream). Furthermore, there are a couple of streaming royalty calculators on the net that can help you gauge how much money you’re going to make from streaming. https://celebrityaccess.com/2021/11/16/how-much-money-do-streaming-services-pay-artists-in-2021/
Macca wrote it for Cilla as the theme song of her BBC TV show. for Prefab to say this is the best Beatles or Beatles related single is quite cheeky. Lady Madonna, Hey Jude, Revolution, The Inner Light, Those were the days, Sour Milk Sea, Maybe Tomorrow are the other choices. :)
it's not true that every brilliant band has 5 very good or great albums but i do appreciate the number 5 can we list those with 5 great albums?
the Beatles version is just a wonderful slice of their individual personalities. This version is from their failed Decca audition on Jan 1 1962. McCartney chose "Searchin'" as one of his "Desert Island Discs" in 1982.
Spoiler Alert: It won't. Percentage wise it'll get a little better because of Mariah (and because there are fewer #1 songs)...but producing is STILL mostly a boys-club. And it doesn't get better in the 2000s
I love this album more than I do "GIRLFRIEND" ... I don't know why....
