And before anyone says "but what about London?": London has rowhouses within a 15-minute walk of The City. Until recently the only residential high-rises were council estates from the '60s and '70s. The footprint of Greater London (not even counting all the suburbs outside the Greenbelt) would have twice as many people in it were it in China.

I don't think there are even any cities in Europe that approach the Asian megacities in size and scope, except Moscow (which barely counts as Europe anyway). Aside from NYC the ones in the Americas that are closest to the Asian megacities are Mexico City (which is mostly super-dense sprawl rather than skyscraperville) and São Paulo. Which just goes to show you how goddamn many people live in East Asia, and why it's perfectly understandable for the Pearl River Delta to have become the world's principal manufacturing hub. There are what, 2, 2.5 billion people within 2000 miles of Hong Kong and Guangzhou?

Mind you, nü-metal had become a thing by the time I was 15 and that stuff is incredibly earnest, but it also is for morons so I mostly avoided it.

Metal, even tacky prog-metal, is pretty universal.

I hope, when she's 67 and fronting The Arcade Fire Experience QC, that Regine has the dignity to put away the keytar.

I listened to that a couple months back. Those Chicano heshers I passed on Walnut Grove Avenue the other day would enjoy it a lot.

My favorite "96 Tears" reference, from a record produced by a master of cheap organ sounds: https://youtu.be/-kwQHVOTRVY

Those first three sentences read like blank verse. It's kinda delightful.

I find those early RHP releases unlistenably dated. The preciousness of it all is just too much. Songs for a Blue Guitar is an untouchable masterpiece, though.

Man, it must have been wild to go through adolescence in a time of earnestness, rather than one of relentless irony and detachment

Apologies because this is Chan's show, but damn we could all use a new Bill Callahan disc right now.

I work next door to the official "First Suburban Chinatown" so it's not like I'm unfamiliar with the significance in Chinese culture of the number 8: e.g., there are three-story strip malls where every suite number ends in 8. (The city of Arcadia, a couple towns north, gained some richly deserved international ridicule when the all-Chinese city council proposed eliminating the number 4 from all street addresses, because 4 in Cantonese is nearly homophonous with "death.") Still, if you'd told me that a band named "88Rising" is a Neo-Nazi group, I'd totally believe you.

I-guess-we-can-call-it-classic-now I see what you did there. I can't listen to Funeral anymore. It's so tied to a specific time in my early 20s, which in retrospect was one of intense loneliness and depression, that it's just too much.

I would be much more interested if Norah Jones did a song with Noname

You're not allowed to call a song "Gut Feeling" unless it's a Devo cover, dammit

Is that...is that one of those guitars that was a freebie with certain Volkswagens in the '00s?

It's possible for every song to sound different from the others but for all of them to be boring.

There's so, so much music I'll never be able to enjoy because my happy pills don't play well with weed and MDMA.

Crabs are nothing to fuck around with, either: https://youtu.be/0QaAKi0NFkA BTW my wife refers to all crustaceans as "sea cockroaches." She's not necessarily wrong!

I was so tempted to post videos from _Kortedala_ all over the comment section of that Four Tops article this morning, because the album is built from samples of orchestral pop that derives heavily from "Reach Out." I should have.
