random thought: since when did strokes songs have to be over 4 minutes long?
you are very right about FFS. I revisited FF a couple years ago and said to myself "why did I ever stop listening to these guys?". I saw FFS live and it was probably the best show i had seen in awhile.
the song is OK. They can get away with releasing OK stuff because they are still a huge brand (playing festivals and all). It's the law of diminishing returns. Remember when the pixies released new stuff? why? #callmeabutthurtstrokesfan
I figured you might agree, blochead. I like rock and roll Strokes, i don't know what this stuff is. MIDI-sequenced rock and roll? Also, Julian is keen on showing off the vocal range he doesn't have.
point taken. that was a weak part of my argument i guess. I dunno. Just having one of those Weezer-esque (not quite that bad) dilemmas. "why don't i like this band as much as i used to"-things. the answer is probably "my tastes have changed" also, i guess i comment more on stereogum than I thought! looking back on them...yikes
good to know. i guess i should've just waited to view the comments trickling in. I guess anyone who feels the way I do about the strokes last few releases probably stopped listening by now. I try to keep up hope. well, that's my one (now two) comments on stereogum for the year, see y'all next time!
when did the strokes become all about video game style guitar shredding, show-off vocal theatrics, precise drum sequencing, and HUGE stadium chorus melodies? I guess I know the answer to that, somewhere around FIOE (which I am still a defender of, 70% of it that is). At least FIOE had some great melodies. As a long time strokes fan, one of those guys who thought they were, at one point, the best band around, I'm a bit disappointed. I'm kinda getting used to it, to be sure. I do realise they are part of my high school nostalgia list of bands (franz ferdinand, the hives, interpol etc.) and most of those kind of bands aren't worth listening to anymore, and not every band can produce great music forever. But it seems like Julian can't even pick out a good hook anymore without injecting it with flashiness. Anyone else having similar thoughts?
the album is very good, but this is definitely the best song on the album
that was supposed to be reply to LeMonjello above
A study would say "no", not worth it. I doubt you're gonna make a sociopath empathize or sympathize. https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/your-online-secrets/201409/internet-trolls-are-narcissists-psychopaths-and-sadists
i like that you linked "God Only Knows", you know, in case someone hasn't heard it :) But anyway, it's funny that punk breezed by Brian Wilson without him noticing...unfortunate that rap didn't do the same...
i'll leave this here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JH7OGGOV018
They're certainly headstrong about their opinions on rock music
i agree, this song is cool and catchy sounding..but also reeks too much of "I Saw the Light" by Todd Rundgren. And to see him jump around and celebrate his ego while singing his borderline-plagiarist "hit song" really rubs me the wrong way.
seriously though, bobby b, rich dicks, "oh hello", and ref jeff are my favs. Also, the way Nash Ricky walks is one of the funniest images on the show.
yeah, not sure how I felt about that statement. The majority of the artists I listen to are male. It's probably because of a lot of reasons: 1. male artists get more exposure than female artists (which is a problem) 2. being a male I relate to other males, pretty simple. I can't help that i guess. 3. I like the particular timbre of male voices more than female voices. So are my ears sexist? maybe so. the male voice typically has a range more favorable to my ears. (again, typically) I will say that women in music are held to a higher standard than men and drilled with undeserving criticism. "I bet she doesn't write her own songs/the dudes in the band are responsible for writing the music" being a big one. That being said, I wouldn't like Chumped even if it had a male singer. ok that was snarky but what i'm trying to say is I don't listen to artists JUST because they are male, nor do I dismiss an artist JUST because she's female.
"Break the Rules" the song and the outfit/dance moves with it seem like something conceived by someone who's operating with an encyclopedia definition of "rock" and has maybe heard a couple rock songs and saw a couple rock videos.
Charli XCX featuring baby Haim! warning! pop cynic opinion - She seems to be very popular (on stereogum as well), but this was not a great performance, right? Also, "i don't wanna go to school, i just wanna break the rules"? I dunno, i just don't get it. that's just my old man opinion i guess (i'm 27)
