Ignorance is not "the point" of this song, as you say. I think Tom summarized it fairly well when he said "Released in advance of his Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City album, Kendrick Lamar’s 'Backseat Freestyle' felt like an out-of-nowhere burst of snarling rap virtuosity, an uncharacteristically vengeful vent session for the usually thoughtful rapper. On the album, it took on new resonance: There, it was a teenage Kendrick impressing his friends by tough-talking in the back of the ride."
Lamar is voicing the part of a character in this song, as he does throughout the album. Those characters' voices come together to form something of a narrative story. How he pulls that off so well is why the album is impressive.
When I first saw this cover, with the censor block covering over the dong, I thought for a second by the look of the album cover that this might be something new by Jamie xx. You know, sticking this motif: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:We%27re_New_Here_cover.svg&page=1
Question (for those viewing on 8-25 -- I don't know when these will go away): is that dude in the Gap ads all over the page the guy from POP ETC, f/k/a The Morning Benders?
Kudos for the mention of Bull Black Nova. Sure, few people would argue that Wilco (the Album) is their best LP (many may argue that it's their worst), but Bull Black Nova is a great song. It'd be a real contender for my top 10 list.
BMG! Those were the days. I literally built my music collection by signing up for BMG under several different pseudonyms to capitalize as many times as possible on the 12-for-1 deal.
I couldn't believe that Yield was so far down the list either. Honestly, it's probably #1 on mine. I think it's one of their most consistent, and overall I think it's their best sound (I've tried to put my finger on it, and I think I'm partial to the Jack Irons albums).
Eh, it still probably beats being that age at a desk job, having spent the same amount of your life having done the same whatever over and over and over. I say that from my desk, at work, clocking in at several years younger than Tom Petty.
In all fairness to Stereogum, they didn't do a whole lot of interpreting. "Billy Corgan Will 'Piss on Fucking Radiohead'" is pretty close to a direct quote. Most of the interpreting has been done by the commenters in this comment section.
I was going to say she actually looks pretty here, whereas I've never found her look in any of the other LDR photos to be attractive. Here she looks less botoxed, less plastic surgeried, less made up, something.
Good bands have always produced crappy imitators. It's never seemed fair to me to judge a band/musician by some subsequent band/musician who tried to copy some aspect of their sound (and maybe did so poorly).
Although I did find that funny...
Maybe it was actually @davegrohl, the college kid from Germany, who hooked up with Frances Bean. Did anyone ever consider that? This is probably just one big twitter-handle misunderstanding.
I usually try to avoid downvotes by not calling people assholes or cunts or talking about shitting on their chests. But then again, I probably care too much about what other people think about me.
Hey, Stereogum: you should advertise the Gummy awards a bit more prominently on your site. I only saw a couple of posts about them, and I feel like if folks didn't check the site on those particular days (I think the first post was right around Thanksgiving -- lots of people traveling) they might have missed it. I know one year the Gummy voting came and went without me noticing and I was saddened to miss out on the democratic process. Just a humble suggestion from a big fan of year-end lists....
I always thought Amber Coffman was cute. But when the DP's came to town and I saw her do that adorable little dance during Stillness is the Move, I fell in love. Hard. And that voice, my God.
