Shouldn't the following line read: "Dulli does a polished and impressive take on “Paper Thin Hotel,” rather than "Cohendoes a polished and impressive take on “Paper Thin Hotel,”?
What hurts more is the videography here. For the love of dancing donkeys, could people please pick a vantage point (not zoomed up to the nose hairs), hold the camera steady, and resist the temptation to scan back and forth while zoomed. We are getting dizzy here!
I will tell you why they cover Coldplay:
When Coldplay's debut "Parachutes" hit shelves in 2000, we were just coming out of the grunge era. At that time, a lot of people (including myself) had transitioned from grunge to jam bands (Widespread Panic, Phish, Moe, Disco Biscuits, etc.). At that time however, here comes this new band out of nowhere who has more of an acoustic alternative sound. I remember hearing Parachutes for the first time and thinking, these guys are going to be big.
I really believe that Coldplay was at the forefront of the indie movement. Many will disagree but when I heard 'Parachutes', it gave me hope for music beyond the grunge era that had pretty much defined my college years.
Fast forward a few years in the 2000's and the indie movement had really gained steam with the likes of Interpol, The Shins, The Wrens, etc.
Tell me your thoughts, but I think this is a main reason why Stereogum continues to cover Coldplay.
Just incredible...Seriously people. Phil Selway is sick too!
3 times through and the songs continue to get better.
Cannot wait to sample it later on within some AKG's.
Honestly, after only one listen, I am not as underwhelmed as I thought I would be after reading this review. Certainly, "The Weekenders" is the best track here...but the next song "Smidge" is no where near as bad as this review makes it out to be.
More listens will reveal its staying power, but so far I think it is another excellent album from THS.
