SpaceGhostPurrp - Mysterious Phonk

Floridian spacecore rapper/producer SpaceGhostPurrp has spent the past couple of years cranking out murky, spectral mixtapes that seem built entirely from the tape-hissy pre-fame output of Three 6 Mafia. Somehow, he parlayed this endeavor into becoming the first rapper every to be signed by the venerable label 4AD. His official debut album Mysterious Phonk: Chronicles Of SpaceGhostPurrp comes out next week, and we’ve already heard the first single “No Evidence” and seen the excellent self-directed video for “The Black God.” Much of the album consists of re-recorded, marginally cleaned-up versions of tracks from his mixtapes, and it’s somehow much more approachable than his older stuff while, at the same time, not really being all that approachable at all. The album is now streaming online; hear it below.

  1. Well, we actually DIDN’T hear first single “No Evidence” as it was in a truncated version. The fleshed out 7 minute version is one of my favorite tracks of the year.

The album is unfortunately hit or miss at times, but in addition to the two tracks mentioned above, “Bringing the Phonk” DELIVERS and the re-vamped “Get Yah Head Bust” are definite highlights.

Still, nobody in the game doing it like SGP. Pancakes & Beats — my two favorite things to add syrup to.
