Weezer’s in the midst of Red and their Hootenanny tour. As we let you know last week, Rivers and the boys are mixing R.E.M., Psychedelic Furs, Gary Numan, and Radiohead covers into their special please-touch set lists. As proof, we have video of them walking through “Creep” in Portland, accompanied by a room full of guitar strummers, percussionists, solo singers, violinists, and a few inscrutable non-contributors.

The G-sharp to A to E chord change (see Radiohead's "Creep," and Weezer's "Say It Ain't So") tends to be a breeding ground for memorable melodies, and Agustin upholds the tradition well. The persistent, head-bob-inducing drive of the snare chugs ...

  1. Why does everyone cover this song. Great band but I think it’s one of their worse songs.

Because it is an easy song to teach and play in this setting? probably 3 chords. Who’s going to jam Pyramid Song on their acoustic guitar?

Note to Weezer: just because you cover CREEP doesn’t make your band still relevant.
    Go back to ’94

Hi Alex. If your band has had a #1 rock single for the past 9 weeks, I’d say you’re pretty damn relevant.

Uh…did you see the other artists in the top 5 Rock Billboard charts? The Offspring? Linkin Park?? Seether???

Even if you win the Special Olympics, you’re still retarded.

  3. i’d be more impressed if they covered this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBGIQ7ZuuiU

I mean it is not even close to one of their best songs, but I think the bigger problem with everyone covering it is that it is just so fucking obvious. For a cover to be good, it almost has to be something obscure that the artist can put their own spin on. Amazingly, John Mayer still probably has the best Radiohead cover to date.

I think you have to take into account that the cover choice is more about the audience participation than trying to look cool. They had an instruction video just before this Hootenanny tour kicked off, teaching fans how to play the songs they would join in on, and apart from “Creep,” all the song selections were singles. Besides, if they were that pandering to the audience, they would’ve chosen a better-known R.E.M. song than “Oddfellows Local 151″ for a b-side.

  6. I mean – why?

  7. Stephen B.  |   Posted on Jun 23rd, 2008

Yes I’m sure Weezer was hoping to remain relevant by covering a Radiohead song from ’94. I make it a rule not to take a band more seriously than they take themselves, and for better or worse, Weezer does not give a shit anymore.

  8. I don’t even think this is about being relevant, I think think this is more about a band playing fun songs with there fans. I’d stop being mad at your Dad and just enjoy it for what it is, music being fun.

Don’t be deceived by the guys whom appeared to be just sitting, they are actually playing guitar with their feet.

  10. Yup, what a bunch of jerks jamming with 100 of their fans.

Why is Rivers wearing a =W= hat, that is terrible. Bands should not wear their own products.

doesn’t this prove, without a doubt, finally, that coldplay is gay?

  13. Chadams  |   Posted on Jun 23rd, 2008

Can’t this leap from standard touring act to has-been rock-n-roll fantasy camp-style “hootenannys” be a clear indicator that Weezer’s time has long been up? After the debacle of having their “opening acts” play in nearby venues to NO ONE a few years back, someone should just put Rivers’ tour ideas in a box like The Office’s Toby did with Dwight’s Jim-related complaints.

  14. they felt safest in the garage – yes?

So weezer decided to jam with people on a COUPLE of dates. Big f’n deal! They’re doing what they want to, when they want to, and surely don’t care what we think. I just had a road trip over the weekend, and me and my friends had a great time with the red album. piss off, the lot of you.

Can’t anyone have a good time anymore without being ridiculed? God bless Rivers and the Weezer clan. They’re having fun you pricks.

Is that Jon Favreau in the white shirt and sunglasses? reading a comic book?

  19. i promised myself that i would slap the next famous person to cover this song.

Rivers Cuomo, you should probably start thinking about upping your security.

  20. Jeff  |   Posted on Jun 24th, 2008

Is that Chino from the Deftones? I know he’s a huge Weezer fan…

  21. Wow! Such hatefull comments. Who molested you with a fondue stick?

Yeah, I thought I saw Jon Favreau too.

  22. You know, it’s a terrible song to cover and I hate the “Red Album,” but God bless Weezer for staying connected to their fanbase, even though it’s radically different than it was a few years ago. I can’t say I’d personally be interested in these sorts of shows, but it must be pretty fun for those who attend.
