Parenthetical Girls’ “Evelyn McHale” may have used the suicide of its 23-year-old namesake as a starting point, but for the Judah Switzer-directed video the band stays far away from the Empire State Building, instead working through their malaise amid trees and fields and plenty of farm animals (horse, donkey, obviously a turkey). There are some beautiful shots here, especially when they seemingly make a pastoral nod to Manet’s “The Lunch On The Grass” (or, at least that’s what jumped into my head). Following that line of thinking, maybe the various shots of them standing or sitting perfectly still while the animals and world move around nod back to McHale’s post-jump repose.

Privilege: Pt. 1 – On Death & Endearments is out 2/23 via Slender Means Society. The vinyl edition is limited to 500 copies. To recount, it’s the first of five limited-edition 12″ EPs that will eventually make up the band’s fourth album Privilege in May of 2011.

This band is so underrated! I’m surprised that the first Stereogum post about them was in November :(
