Kill Rock Stars has been generous with the Elliott Smith alternate takes this August — Elliott Smith Month, they’re calling it, in honor of his 8/6 birthday. First we got “Alameda,” then “Punch And Judy,” plus an offer of a scrapped trumpet-led version of “Needle In The Hay” in exchange for an email address. “Angeles” is arguably Elliott Smith’s most-loved song, and while this alternate take doesn’t shed much new light on the composition, it’s a thing of pretty intense beauty just the same: just one vocal track, high in the mix, and an acoustic guitar. The original could hardly be called ornate, but this take is especially spare, and possibly even better for that. Listen.
