Over the weekend we learned two things about Jay-Z’s forthcoming Magna Carta Holy Grail: the tracklist (although no features were revealed, boooooo) and that one of the songs would include lyrics from Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Turns out, that song is the album’s penultimate track “Holy Grail” and it features a guest appearance from Justin Timberlake. Check out the lyrics above, which include “and we all just entertainers / and we’re stupid / and contagious.” Based on the way the lyrics are presented, I have a feeling it’ll be Timberlake singing those words and not Jay rapping them. The album app is now available for download and the song drops tomorrow.

Magna Carta Holy Grail is out 7/4 via a Samsung Galaxy app.

  1. Considering Jay Z samples everything it’s not a huge surprise he’d co-opt Nirvana lyrics to try to remain on top.

  2. Remember when finding references in music and movies was fun?

  3. Thanks for ruining the surprise, Courtney.

  4. 2 songs now with “michael jackson thriller” as a lyric, first coming from Farrah Fawcett Hair by Capital Cities – ehhh, poor lyrics all around

  5. Don’t you know how to write a song without cursing, it will never get played on the radio.

  6. the NIRVANA part is actually kinda well done
