song-of-the-summer

We kicked off this process last month, when you guys nominated several thousand songs to be considered Song Of The Summer 2013, and after tabulating your nominations, we set up a poll and you voted for one of six songs — from a ballot that included excellent summer jams by Kanye West, Disclosure, Vampire Weekend, and more. It was quite a horse race! But there can be only one winner. And that winner is …

Shocked? You shouldn’t be. It was a landslide, as you can see by the breakdown below. “Get Lucky” got nearly 50 PERCENT of the total vote. Mandate! That left five candidates fighting over the remaining half of the pie, much of which was crushed by Vampire Weekend. Kanye, lamentably, came in dead last. A cruel summer, indeed.

Here’s how the pie got gobbled:

So with the coronation behind us, the reign of “Get Lucky” has officially begun, and with it, the summer of 2013. Thanks for voting! Let us know in the comments what else will be comprising your playlists, soundtracking your summer.

  1. What’s the opposite of saying “I am in shock!” while still sounding surprised that I’m not in shock?

  2. Im suprised that Daft Punk didnt get even more votes!

  3. Daft Punk – “Get Lucky” song of the summer.

Icona Pop – “I Love It” everybody who didn’t hear it over a year ago’s song of the summer.

  4. Daft Punk is the one who knocks…

  5. finally. now to start voting for song of the fall.

  6. All of the nominees, one big playlist, brats, beer, fireworks, more beer, vodka tonics, more brats, burgers, regret, fireworks, beer, sleep.

  7. Summer is the most depressing and loneliest season as far as I’m concerned, so shout out to my vote in Deafheaven.

    • IMMA LET YOU FINISH BUT WINTER IS THE MOST DEPRESSING AND LONELIEST SEASON THO, MAYBE IT’S OVERRATED (AND CLICHED AND OVERPLAYED [LIKE A LOT OF THESE SONGS OOOOOHHHHHH]) AND YOU’RE TRYING TO SUBVERT ITS MEANING BUT I’LL STICK TO BEING DEPRESSED IN WINTER!!!

      • Winter is a depressing classic, but I think summer is the season that can really catch you off guard. The longer days are appreciated, but where I live, I’ve few (if no) friends to keep me company and there’s nothing to do. Everyone has plans on the weekends if you’re going by what you see on social media, and especially a week like this one where everyone is away on vaca or has plans of their own, the boredom can wear you down hard on the weekend.

  8. So if I know my political analysis, a mashup-coalition of the other five songs would be better than Get Lucky? I NEED to hear that

  9. “Diane Young” and “Dream House” are my songs of the summer, I just can’t listen to “Get Lucky” anymore, it’s painful.
Not that “Get Lucky” is a bad song or whatever, but all the album hype left me uninterested and the ultra over-played single is not appealing either.

  10. I’m still using “Black Skinhead” on my summer playlist.

As well as some Run The Jewels, new Drake, Kendrick, Chance the Rapper (don’t forget “the Rapper”), a cut of Big K.R.I.T.’s new mixtape, some ASAP, that XCX with Danny Brown, Q.U.E.E.N.

OH SHEEIT IT’S X (actually that Thundercat song should be on ALL of your summer playlists)

Blurred Lines, Lose Yourself to Dance, Pusher Love Girl

Close it down with some Fuck Buttons ahhhhh yeah get drunk and pass out it’s the summertime!

  11. I don’t always have a #1 Summer Jam, but when I do, I prefer “Doin’ It Right.”

  12. Meh, again a bunch of white people co-opting black people’s music, jk y’all lol <3 bye

  13. Regret not throwing, “Clash The Truth” into the ring.

  14. Hiiiiii. So. I *despise* linkwhoring in the comments sections of popular blogs… so I will refrain from doing so. BUT. If you want to hear my new dj mix, which is two hours of summery disco JAMS, including the Stereogum song of the summer, you could go find it through the link in my profile. I made it specifically for drinking by the pool or on a rooftop. Enjoy! (if you want to, or whatever)

  15. Is it too late to nominate Janelle Monae Dance Apocalyptic?

  16. It is a crime that Come & Get It by Selena Gomez is not on this list…

  17. “Wakin on a Pretty Day,” by Kurt Vile of course. “Ride” by Wild Nothing is a good summer song, some of that Dungeonesse record is great for summer too, “Show You” in particular. Also Chance the Rapper’s “Chain Smoker” as well Wale’s “LoveHate Thing” will always be a part of this summer for me.

  18. …so I guess disco isn’t dead, then.

  19. I’m still upset that Mikal Cronin wasn’t even nominated.

  20. It’s way too late be nominating, but Kanye vs. Tame Impala would have steamrollered over everything else:

  21. #1, by far: The Mowgli’s, “San Francisco” – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RZqPq1-1Tw
