Cali sisters HAIM have yet to release an LP, but when they do, the thing is gonna be an absolute destroyer. The band’s singles just get better and bigger with each subsequent release, and “The Wire” — which premiered today on Zane Lowe’s BBC show — is their most robust and confident track to date: It has the lushness of Fleetwood Mac and the swagger of the Pretenders over a drum track borrowed from Gary Glitter or T. Rex, with a studio-enhanced density of sound that stands up next to Ke$ha’s most frenetic and ambitious material. It’s a fucking great, great song. Listen.

  1. Re: review, it’s a drum track borrowed straight from the fucking Eagles (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqhwwkT8fWQ), not “Gary Glitter or T. Rex.”

Play the opening 15-20 seconds at the same time, there is no question. Michael, do not name check classic rock acts that might get you more an appreciable nod from uneducated hipsters.

That being said, I really enjoy the track itself. Hi Haim!

  2. Wow, identical. I guess The Eagles aren’t as cool to namecheck as Gary Glitter or T. Rex.

    • Nah, I just dropped the ball. Hyden already called me out on it. It’s absolutely “Heartache Tonight.” I just missed it.

      • Quick to point out mistakes, slow to give praise for everything else. As a music journalist, fact-checkers freak me out, but also keep me on my toes.

Loved your references, by the way. Obviously wasn’t able to pull out that exact Eagles track from the mental vault, but hey, all you’re trying to do is quickly sum up the vibe of the song. This isn’t a 3000-word, deeply-researched feature story. Jeez.

  3. Yeah it’s a cool track, but it just feels like amateurish writing with good production. It vamps too long, the vocals are crammed, and the melody just meanders too much for my taste. Again, I can see why people would love this tune, just giving some counterpoint to the assessment that this is a “great, great song.”

  4. All I gotta say is, everytime I hear a new jam from these gals, they get hotter and hotter.

  5. emmm, its an Ok song. cheesy fill solo though. Really , a great song?

  6. solid track!

  7. I really don’t dig this at all. But I also really don’t like pop music, which appears to be the direction Stereogum has taken. Different directions, I suppose.

  8. I just spent all day yesterday slogging through their released tracks up to this point and even watched their set at Glastonbury. I am still baffled at the buzz they’re getting.

  9. This has been a nice track to remind me that summer isn’t over. I’ll be listening to more of these ladies.

  10. Love these girls and this video. Can’t wait for the album to drop on 9/30!
