Earlier this year, James Blake’s sophomore album Overgrown stood its ground pretty firmly against the colossal amount of hype and excitement. In fact it’s one of those albums that people might get into a few months after its release, once those initial feelings die down (this only took a few months, it’ll probably be another 20 year before people can actually listen to that new MBV album on its own terms). One of the very best songs off the new album, “Life Round Here,” got a remix treatment by Blake featuring Chance The Rapper and it just debuted on BBC 1 Radio.
When asked by DJ Zane Lowe about how it came about, Blake said he immediately liked Chance after seeing him at SXSW, and regarding the original track: “I never really felt the track was finished, even when it went on the album, I just felt there was this space.” The track was preceded by a quick phone call with Blake who explained that he was, “standing in the rain in Trent, outside London,” because he’s shooting a video with Chance for this new version. No word yet when the video will come out, but he did say it will include, “everything from horses to Somalian pirates and Chevy Impalas.” Listen to the new version below.
