Future Islands gif

Earlier this week, Future Islands performed for the first time on the Late Show With David Letterman, and they absolutely ripped shit, eliciting straight-up giggling glee from Letterman himself. And Letterman has not forgotten it. He called back to it during last night’s monologue a couple of times, without context, just yelling “Let’s dance!” And whoever runs his Tumblr also posted the gif above recently. Let’s just keep this going, OK? If it makes Future Islands famous, it’s worth it. Watch the monologue below.

Lest we forget, Future Islands’ new album Singles is out 3/25 on 4AD.

  1. He did it right before bringing out Carrie Brownstein too. Good stuff and rightly so because that performance was crazy.

  2. It really was a monster performance. I don’t think I’ve ever loved an album the way I love In Evening Air, so I’m truly happy for these guys. No band deserves to break through via meme more than Future Islands do.

Not to mention, geeked-out Letterman is the best kind of Letterman.

    • It’s always nice to see him break his postmodern irony schtick. There’s a great clip of Sonic Youth doing “100%” in ’92. They all end up flailing on the ground by the end of the song, then Letterman steps in and has no idea what to say.

  3. Future Islands references at 3:11 (helluva coincidence) and 4:39

    That performance was legendary.

  4. I really think Letterman just brings out the fucking beast in bands more than any other late night show. Remember Wolf Like Me? That Feel Good Inc one? The one where the Beastie Boys starts the show in the streets? God. Maybe it’s the gap.

    • WHERE’S THE BEEF? Music critic and wordsmith Mike Tysoe couldn’t hold it in any longer, his opinion no longer silent, but deadly. With his patented rapier wit Tysoe proclaimed “my fart ripped shit. this band did not.” in reference to Future Islands Letterman debut. His bomb will surely leave a wasteland of nuclear winter in generations of music criticism to come.

    • I’m with you mike this guy had to throw in the moves to distract from his piss poor vocals.
