Nirvana With Chad Channing

This doesn’t apply to all KISS fans, but there is a particular subset of KISS fans that is more obsessed with the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame than anyone else, including the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Foundation. Makes sense: KISS inspire a certain insane devotion, and until this year, the Hall treated the band as if they had committed some Pete Rose-esque transgression that left them ineligible for induction.

But this year, inducted they will be! However, not to the satisfaction of KISS or KISS fans, who were initially outraged that the Hall would only be inducting the original KISS lineup — Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Peter Criss, and Ace Frehley — and not Criss’ and Frehley’s longstanding replacements, Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer. Then, KISS fans were FURTHER outraged when it was announced that fellow 2014 inductees Nirvana would be inducted with TWO drummers: the band’s sixth drummer, Dave Grohl, AND the band’s fourth drummer, Chad Channing, who played on Bleach! (The following Nirvana drummers were not inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame: Aaron Burckhard, Dale Crover, Dave Foster, and Dan Peters.) To be clear, KISS fans were outraged about the inclusion of Channing here, not Grohl, which seems decidedly wrongheaded considering the supposed infraction against which they were speaking out in the first place. You have to read this thread in full to get an idea of the disappointment and anger sparked by this news, but here’s a sample:

If this is true it really is an outrage…
Eric Carr was in the band 11 years and is certainly more well known.

I suppose if you treat the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame as a thing to take even remotely seriously, this might be an outrage? I dunno. I’m pretty bummed that Mike Mussina didn’t get elected to the Baseball Hall Of Fame, but I’m hoping he’ll make it next year. I’ll go to the induction, too! I loved Moose. Back to KISS: What I find more outrageous are Simmons’ comments about the RNRHOF inclusion of numerous black and female artists. Check these loathsome quotes from a recent interview he did with

Gene Simmons on hip-hop and dance music in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame:

I have no beef with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. You go on with your bad self and get more disco artists. Get the Boston Pops Orchestra to be inducted! A long time ago it was diluted. It’s really back room politics, like Boss Tweed. A few people decide what’s in and what’s not. And the masses just scratch their heads. You’ve got Grandmaster Flash in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame? Run-D.M.C. in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? You’re killing me! That doesn’t mean those aren’t good artists. But they don’t play guitar. They sample and they talk. Not even sing!

Gene Simmons on Donna Summer and Madonna in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame:

Donna was my next door neighbor for many years, I knew and liked her, she was on my [1978] solo record. But if you asked Donna, ’What kind of artist are you?’ do you think she would say ’rock?’ If you asked Madonna, ’What kind of artist are you?’ do you think she would say, ’Oh, rock!’ So what they hell are they doing in the Hall Of Fame? They can run their organization any way they’d like, but it ain’t rock! It just isn’t! If you don’t play guitar and you don’t write your own songs, you don’t belong there.

There ya have it, from the same guy who sued Teenage Fanclub over the cover of Bandwagonesque because he trademarked the logo of a moneybag with a dollar symbol on it. Now that’s rock and roll. Right?

  1. Serious question, does anyone who wasn’t alive in the 70s listen to Kiss past 9th grade?

  2. So many strong opinions based upon the false premise that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has meaning.

  3. It is certainly interesting that hip-hop acts are being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame before so many actual rock bands that have been eligible for years (Love, Joy Division, The Cars, etc.) but then again, it’s not like the place really matters. Nothing important is in Cleveland.

  4. Ah Gene Simmons, poster child for why rock and roll has tarnished its reputation with overwrought cock posturing and empty headed lyrical sentiment. Nirvana crapped on that cliche. KISS are cool for being KISS and have their merits, but that clown makeup lout loves to slag off bands that matter and at the end of the day, even Bleach era Nirvana had something to say, as opposed to KISS’s party anthems.

  5. Is that really true about the moneybag lawsuit? Cause if it is, I think Scrooge McDuck would have something to say to both of them.

    • It’s not true at all, a simple Google search or visit to Wikipedia can disprove that. All he did was send a letter to Geffen about their logo looking exactly like the one he trademarked, so they sent him a check. Michael Nelson is just mad that a Jew is getting in the RNRHOF, so he’s using hateful stereotypes while simultaneously, baselessly, accusing Simmons of racism and sexism to cover his own ass.

  6. I feel like any worthwhile conversation about The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame can be boiled down to KISS vs. Nirvana.

  7. I have to agree he makes a point, hip-hop is not rock! I guess the hall of fame is just celebrating artists that were akin in the sense of attitude etc. IDK.

Seems to me though, the Hall of Fame is trying super hard to be even minutely relevant to anyone.

    • They’re trying to expand the definition of “rock” because they’re running out of bands that are willing to suck cock for an induction.

  8. Ah, I get it. Any gripe about hip hop and pop is automatically racist and sexist.

  10. The term of Rock and Roll was become more of a term for popular music in its vaguest sense and a broad musical attitude in a slightly less vaguer sense rather than a certain genre.I guess it is okay to be frustrated with how the etymology of the term has transgressed, I wouldn’t say the Hall of Fame is misusing the term or really misrepresenting itself. Even as a genre rock & roll has and had always very unclear boundaries, as do all genres but even more so with rock n’ roll it has always been kind of all encompassing. The term rock is usually used more when referring to genre than rock n roll, but again is pretty vague. Rap can be seen as distinctly different from rock or it can be seen as having direct traces back to rock music so even if we are taking the hall of fame as a rather genre specific institution it’d be fine to include rap. Does Kiss sound anything like Buddy Holly? Not Really. Yes, they both share guitar playing and singing, those are the things Kiss chose to keep in their music, but one could always argue that any sound or style a band or sub genre has that makes them different or what makes them or it stand out eliminates them from a parent genre. In other words what ever Kiss brings to the table the makes them different from artists like Buddy Holly could be argued, especially at the time, the Kiss weren’t rock artists either. Purists could always say so and so is lacking this or that and therefore shouldn’t be classified as this or that, but of course all of this goes back to the flimsiness of genres in general, but even when we give credibility to the hall of fame and the use of genres the hall still has a leg to stand on when it comes to including artists from the rap genre as well as other genres.

  11. I for one, am not outraged.

  12. Didn’t Kiss release a disco song? Jesus… Simmons is a tool.

    • what exactly about being Israeli precludes him from being sexist and/or racist?

Also, I was kinda with Gene Simmons until this line

‘But they don’t play guitar. They sample and they talk. Not even sing!’

Because, you know, singing or playing guitar was invented by rock and roll, and sampling and talking has no place in rock and roll.

He comes off sounding like 14 year old blogger who listens to KISS. Oh wait.

    • I’ve met Israelis who are racist as fuck.

  14. just someone who believes in the heart of Rock and Roll.
