New Pornographers - Brill Bruisers

It’s been four years since the last New Pornographers LP, Together, but they’ve just announced the details for its follow-up, Brill Bruisers, and shared the new album’s title track (with interactive artwork). The lineup behind Brill Bruisers is A.C. Newman, Blaine Thurier, Dan Bejar, John Collins, Kathryn Calder, Kurt Dahle, Neko Case, and Todd Fancey. The song is pretty much everything you want from the New Pornographers, which means it’s fantastic. Check it out, along with Brill Bruisers’ tracklist and New Pornos tour dates (some with Pains Of Being Pure At Heart), below.

  1. I’m having more fun than I should have with the interactive cover.

  2. gonna assume that “Spidyr” is a “cover” of Dan’s Swan Lake song of the same name.

hope there are a few Dan originals besides that tho.

  3. i would like to take a moment to say that this song is fucking awesome

  4. This song is incredible, wow.

  5. not bad. on Together it seemed the New Pornographers days as one of the world’s best bands might have passed, so hope the new album is a return to form.

  6. wow this song is an amazing example of a perfect pop song. Kind of put these guys on the back burner after being underwhelmed by Together (although a great album cover). Glad to see Neko Case contributing can’t wait I feel like the world needs another great New Pornographers album

  7. Anyone want to explain to me what the title means?

    • it’s a reference to the Brill Building, home to many famous song writing partnerships from the earlier days of the rock and roll era…like Carol King and Jerry Goffin, Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller. I’m thinking the word bruiser intends to describe a meaty batch of power pop tunes.

  8. Good song, it bodes well for the album hopefully. The last one was aweful. No Vancouver dates for the tour? They have really turned their back on the city that formed them.

    • They’re playing Pemberton Festival – I guess that’s their “local” date. It’s weird too because all those guys, except Neko and AC, still live in the city. I see Bejar around town ALL the time.

  9. Incredible! Unrestrained by the zeitgeist, just a straight up perfect and concise tune.

  10. Great tune, but was I the only one who liked Together? I caught them at Lollapalooza the year it came out with Dan and Neko. It was a really great show and the Together songs sounded great live.

    • You’re not!! I thought Together was generally seen as a “return to form” after Challengers, so I’m kind of surprised to see the negative comments here. Like I loved Dan Bejar’s songs on Together. They seem to come from a totally different place than his Destroyer songs, but “If You Can’t See My Mirrors” is a treasure. THEN AGAIN I also think Challengers is a really good record, so no one listen to me, I’m crazy.

This song also happens to rule.

    • that was a great Lolla performance! I loved Neko’s big ol hat.

    • i liked together a lot, but in hindsight i think it probably has a handful of properly outstanding a.c. newman numbers and a fair amount of filler. it’s bookended by a couple of terrific songs. “we end up together” is in my top 5 new pornographers songs.

i would rate it above challengers, although people were hard on challengers too.

  11. If the rest of the album is this good it will probably be my AOTY. Holy shit am I ready.
