Chris Cohen – “Torrey Pine” (Stereogum Premiere)

Sadie Bell | March 1, 2016 - 10:02 am

Chris Cohen’s long-awaited follow-up to 2012’s great Overgrown Path is set for release this May. The upcoming As If Apart features more of the complex, dreamy pop sound as we’ve come to expect from the Deerhoof/Ariel Pink/Cass McCombs associate, though it also ventures into a more expansive psychedelic sound. Lead single “Torrey Pine” is a romantic psych-pop track that explores the impact one person’s love has on another’s world. The amalgamation of Cohen’s lush voice, the light, sparkly guitar, and the song’s celestial production creates a sound resonant of the ’70s. Cohen’s poetic lyrics like “swimming in a silver silhouette on a summer night” inevitably sweep you away to the quixotic, moon-beamed world that he has created in “Torrey Pine.” Listen below and check out the tracklist to As If Apart.

01 “Torrey Pine”
