Sylvan Esso Announce “Visual EP” Of Songs Re-Recorded With All-Star Backing Band

When Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn first teamed up as Sylvan Esso — she of the Appalachian vocal group Mountain Man, he of the weirdo folk-rock project Megafaun — this was the hook: Here are two indie Americana musicians from North Carolina trying their hand at synth-pop instead. Thus far Sylvan Esso have given us two albums of that winsome formula, and for their next release they’ve literally gone back to their roots. The duo spent a day at Asheville’s Echo Mountain Studios with an all-star team of sorts featuring members of Wye Oak, the Mountain Goats, and Hiss Golden Messenger plus their own projects Mountain Man and Megafaun. They came away with a “visual EP” of songs from their recent What Now re-imagined in full-band format, which they’re calling Echo Mountain Sessions. NPR is rolling out a new video from the project each day this week leading up to its official release this Friday. The first video is “Rewind,” which features Wye Oak’s Jenn Wasner on keys and which you can watch below.

Sylvan Esso also recorded an interview about Echo Mountain Sessions with NPR:

Echo Mountain Sessions is out 7/28. Pre-order 12″ vinyl here.
