This second single from 808′s & Heartbreak was previewed in concert earlier this month. Now Kanye’s letting us hear the studio version in its full-length, unmastered form. As on “Love Lockdown,” the hook is a showcase for Kanye’s heavily Auto-Tune’d singing, in this case about the girl “cold as the winter wind” who broke his heart. It’s lonely at the top, Yeezy. Hear the coldest story ever told this way…

That audio comes via a Kanye blog post full of NSFW pics of the fuzzy faced, nude models on display at last night’s album listening party. By next year fluffy wool masks will be the new shutter shades.

Kanye West's Grammy speech from 2005
Some of saw my brief CNN iReport video about hip hop's misrepresentation during Sunday's Grammy Awards. Thanks to WorldStarHipHop, I was reminded about how important Kanye West's voice is, not only to hip hop, but to popular music and culture. His brash ...

I’m not exactly sure how much mastering will change the sound but if that snare cracked a little harder this thing would be such a jam.

Love the rambling Autotune sing-along at the end.

Undoubtedly better than “Love Lockdown.” I guess I’ll just have to get over the auto-tune thing. I mean, I can’t image how bad his natural singing voice sounds.

    • christian  |   Posted on Oct 17th, 2008

The autotune is CLEARLY used an and effect, rather than a crutch for singing. This has been going on for years (I think it was Cher of all people who did it first). It feels trite now in hip-hop, but Jesus, people. Get over it. It’s like reverb in indie-rock. deal with it.

  5. honestly, with the autotune. am i the only one who doesnt think the hooks are THAT TIGHT either?

    • Andrew  |   Posted on Oct 16th, 2008

No you’re not. These two songs do absolutely nothing you can’t hear on mainstream radio hip-hop.

  6. I’m not sure I dig the whole Auto-Tune T-Pain thing. Good on him for trying to expand his sound, but I just don’t feel this at all. The first single didn’t do anything for me either.

We’ll soon enough hear the rest of the album.

  7. I’ve been a big fan of his since the beginning, but i’m not feeling this much either, auto tune is so played out on modern radio and you expect Kanye to set the trends, not follow them. I miss soul beats with amazing rhymes. I still love Kanye and plan on listening to this all week, but it’s so disappointing.

Massive Attack made this record in 1991-

  9. Kanye is Kanye. Everything he does is just fresh

  10. Love it, think its great!

  11. bla bla bliot  |   Posted on Oct 16th, 2008

kanye’s definitely made some real innovative, original, quality stuff but this song’s pretty weak. i’m with the rest of the auto-tune haters here…it just locks him into this cheesey, annoying crap rap sound.
diamonds are forever…but cubic zirconia just plain sounds better.

  12. Ross  |   Posted on Oct 16th, 2008

You’re not going to find a bigger Kanye fan than me, but i will admit, i wasn’t really feeling Love Lockdown at first, but i think it’s because this auto-tuning sound is not what we’re used to hearing out of Ye. I think the more you listen to it, the more it can be appreciated. The hook in Heartless is infinitely better than Love Lockdown though. I instantly loved this song

  13. I love it. Agreed that the autotuner is getting played out but please stop calling it the T-Pain thing. Roger Troutman did it long before T-Pain back in the 70′s.

  14. Aren’t sophomore slumps supposed to come after your first album?

    • Brian  |   Posted on Oct 16th, 2008

My thoughts exactly. Both this and Love Lockdown have been utterly mediocre. It sounds like Kanye is releasing a half-baked concept album.

  15. Benson  |   Posted on Oct 16th, 2008

These songs are boring. They are entirely predictable and the hooks are nowhere near as good as they were on Graduation. There is no intense layering of sounds like he used to have. It’s just boring.

  16. Blew  |   Posted on Oct 16th, 2008

woW. i wasnt expecting the synthesize, but uhM.
it was aiight……….. not his BEST WORK.
but for some odd reason i might styll bye this one.
hopefully the rest of the tracks will not be a disappointment.!

  17. Sean Jean  |   Posted on Oct 16th, 2008

Benson hit the nail on the head.

  18. machu  |   Posted on Oct 16th, 2008

on first listen it sounds pretty good. better than love lockdown but nowhere near graduation. I get the feeling that this album is more just an experiment for kanye than a real album, especially since he has another album slated to come out in june

  19. Why is kanye doin shit thats so worked over when hes been so successful being himself in the past? T-Pain called, Kanye, he wants his sound back.

  20. KILL THE AUTO-TUNE! ENOUGH ALREADY! I’m sick of this trite crap that these “artists” are calling “music”.

  21. flyinsolo  |   Posted on Oct 17th, 2008

Artists usually experiment for their own entertainment. You know just for fun..I mean it is their job to create music. Then when they’ve created enough songs they might decide to release it to the public just for the heck of it. I mean wouldn’t you do that if you were an artist instead of just leaving all that music lying around? Cuz you never know who might like it..This is just a possibility, like someone above said he has another album slated for june, so there’s a good chance this is something he did just for fun..

  22. I agree with Benson as well. There is a difference between Minimalism, and boring. It is not horrible…but just lacks the kanye sound. But as he has stated, this was an album he did because he felt he needed to do (something really personal). The album he is planning on releasing in June 09, i feel, will be a traditional release

I’m glad someone mentioned Cher as one of the first in the last 10 years who first started using this auto-tuner although didn’t Peter Frampton use it on his live album in the 70s? Anyway, I liked “Love Lockdown” but didn’t like this as much. It just sounded like a regular hip hop heartbreak song. I think i hear the auto-tune part the most during the chorus and not much during the song so maybe the whole album won’t overkill. I’ll still give the album a listen. Even though I like artists that release proper albums in a year or less since they want to keep themselves new and relevant, I find that a lot of them aren’t that good. This Kanye album might fit in the whole release the album online for free like 9th Wonder and Murs did although that album was damn good though.

    • frampton used a voice box, utilizing a speaker that he could put in his mouth. he could then shape his mouth so his guitar sounded like words. this is different. did anyone see the guy who did use a voice box in kanye’s band on the glow in the dark tour? that guy was sick.

I think this is going to be Kanye West’s “Chris Gaines” album.

I dig the new Kanye stuff. Not that Robocop so much but when you listen to Love Lockdown, forget about the autotune and listen to the lyrics, he’s talkin much more about love than his relationship with his old lady. This song is cool, I dig the tempo and what he’s talkin about. Unline T-pain who is just making club joints and talkin about nothing, Kanye is presenting stories. I dig it.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!!! I usually HATE Kanye, but I fell in love with this song.
