The thing that distinguishes Bonnaroo from most every other festival — aside from people smelling worse than most every other festival — is that it’s on a remote farm with absolutely no noise ordinance-imposed curfews. Which means every year there are some sets that begin at 3AM or so, and those are most often the most memorable. Depending on your “state of mind.” This year the most notable potentially mind-expanding late night slot goes to LCD Soundsystem (2:30AM on Friday), in case you ever wanted to drink whiskey and champagne with James Murphy on a farm during afterparty hours. Bonnaroo switched things up by booking a Thursday lineup worth heading down early for — Neon Indian, the xx, the Dodos, Blitzen Trapper, Local Natives, Miike Snow, Here We Go Magic, and Fanfarlo all play that day — otherwise the relatively slimmer lineup gets spread rather easily and conflict-free over the festival’s remaining three days. Except for Friday night, which has a hardcore bunch-up at midnight: The Flaming Lips doing The Dark Side Of The Moon, the Black Keys, and the awesomely billed Daryl Hall & Chromeo set all kick off at exactly the same minute. Stevie Wonder, Weezer, and Jay-Z are hit on Saturday, and aside from Phoenix, Ween, and Japandroids, the most exciting thing going on Sunday is probably Aziz, Nick Kroll, and Paul Scheer’s 1PM comedy set. Comedy people actually might wanna make 1PM their special time: Conan’s doing his set then on both Friday and Saturday. Lots Of Love.

The Friday night midnight overlap is heartbreaking. I was really excited for all three of those. I could never turn down the Flaming Lips though, especially if they’re covering Dark Side of the Moon.
Tell me about it, the Flaming Lips, Black Keys and Daryl Hall & Chromeo were all at the top of my list. But as a pretty big FLips fan I can’t see missing them. Plus I remember hearing Wayne say a couple months ago that they were gonna start with their regular set and then go into Dark Side, which looks plausible because although they’re only scheduled til 2, they’re the last to go on Which.
