North Highlands – “Sugar Lips” Video (Stereogum Premiere)

When we posted “Sugar Lips,” from Brooklyn’s North Highlands, I mentioned how they can sound delicate without getting lost in mushy instrumental atmosphere. Their chamber pop has a bit of an edge to it, with dance beats and quick rhythmic turns working alongside the strings and singer Brenda Malvini’s sweet vocals. Both come into play with the video for “Sugar Lips.” It stars a male and a female bodybuilder, on their way to an epic arm wrestling match. Director Adam Newport-Berra — who was DP on Dirty Projectors’s “Stillness Is The Move” video — captures nice details here: Their sun-worn skin, the puff of chalk dust after a lift. Their dead seriousness contrasts nicely with the song, but by the time the song gets to the shuffling, bass-and-drum ending, both the band and the bodybuilders are dancing. And shooting confetti rockets.
