Bon Iver x James Blake - "Fall Creek Boys Choir"

Earlier this hour BBC Radio played a brand-new track from the angel-voiced auteur connection of James Blake and Bon Iver. Immediately afterward, Blake posted it on YouTube, and we’ve got it for you below. Amazingly, the song manages to split the difference between Bon Iver’s Bon Iver, Bon Iver and Blake’s self-titled debut album without making the combination sound forced. It is a pretty, pretty piece of music.

“Fall Creek Boys Choir” hits iTunes August 29.

  1. Match made in a post-dubstep forest (heaven).

    • this is not post-dubstep, the style of this song is actually much more similar to early dubstep such as the music of Burial, though this song is severely lacking the sublime mystery and texture that ignited the genre. what came from dubstep, post dubstep if you will, is the frenetic sawtooth synths of skrillix and such. just because Blake is five years behind the ball doesnt make his music post-dubstep. Besides your obvious mistake, I find this track to be predictable and boring.

    • Can we make a rule that anyone who wants to post negative comments needs to be more creative than “yawn”?

    • if by ‘yawn’ you mean that listening to something this beautiful and intricately crafted can be exhausting, that it emotionally drains your body and leaves you as a shell of your once former (read:prior to listening to the song) self, without energy, tired and beaten , then I agree; I yawned, too

    • if by ‘yawn’ you mean that listening to something this beautiful, this intricate, this…piercing, can leave your body drained and emotionally exhausted, then I agree; I yawned, too.

      • I really liked it, but I totally respect the opinion of anyone that doesn’t. My point is, at least say something constructive. And if it is so yawn inducing why are you clicking on the link and posting comments?

        • Oh I totally agree. And to be fair, positive reviews should be held to the same standard, no? I’ve seen a ‘damn’, and a ‘whoa’ so far..not exactly eye opening.

          • I don’t totally agree with that. I think if you post something positive you can get away with a little more genericness. If I post “This is awesome” I do come off as a little boring but I think that is better than coming off as a snarky message board negative nancy.

    • Usually the majority opinion in the Stereogum comments is in the right, but I’m going with him on this one. It sounds like a lazy b-side. I’m sorry, but I agree.

    • I think “yawn” is about as succinct as you can get when referring to a track as boring as this one was. I’m a fan of both artists but this is a disappointment. Try again Bon Blake.

  3. I love that this exists. Is this just a one off deal or is there a full-length to come?

    • There was a short interview with James Blake after they played the song. It sounds like there are more songs, but no plan for a full release or anything like that at the moment. Here’s hoping.

  4. This track is really, really disappointing. I fucking hate that stupid jarring keyboard percussion sound that keeps repeating.

    • Sounds like a plastic straw sliding against a soda lid to me. Justin bringing the middle-American authenticity.

      • So funny, thought the same thing! “Is that the sound of putting a straw into a Mr. Misty from DQ?”

      • If I’m not mistaken, that instrument is a latin percussion instrument called a Cuica… its a drum with a bamboo stick attached to the drum head, and when you rub the stick quickly it makes a sound like a laughing monkey. It’s traditionally used in Samba music. #professorlatinpercussiongum

(Now, just imagine that awkward percussion lesson at age 14 when your drum instructor tells you “you just gotta rub the stick up and down really quickly like you’re…..ummm…” YEP.)

Or, ya know… its totally just a straw and plastic lid.

        • For some reason I thought it sounded like a dog barking that’s been messed around with in the computer or something. Like in really old terrible keyboard synths when they’d have the “nature soundz”

  5. I’m a little disappointed, as well. Justin Vernon has played with auto-tune in much better fashion than this. This was just too much. All the voices might have meshed better in their natural state. However, there were some nice harmonies, and it is a pretty tune. I also enjoyed most of the background noises throughout.

I hope this is just a taste of more to come!

  6. if these two are the respective poster boys for white boy soul in their homelands, i’d say the yanks won this round…i still don’t think very highly of james blake

  7. When I hear all of Justin Vernon’s side projects they just don’t compare to Bon Iver. I’m convinced this guy should have complete creative control over everything he does. And James Blake is always a yawn. Still, this could have been worse.

  8. I’d rather listen to Balam Acab (jk, but serious, I would).

But this song is pretty great. I mean, what did you expect. It’s Justin singing over a James Blake beat – no brainer. It sounds like it sounded on paper last week.

  9. Someone please stop this ‘bon iver’ madness…almost makes me yearn for more Matt & Kim propaganda, ALMOST:)

  10. It would be a lot better if it was James Blake having a part in a Bon Iver song, not Bon Iver having a part in an instrumentally and aesthetically James Blake song.

  11. I love both these guys, but wow, this is practically unlistenable. Garbage.

  12. I thought Auto-tune was dead (?)

  13. 2 half-assed hacks that sound like sh*t together. Go ahead and hide this comment but it’s not going to help this garbage.

  14. I don’t think it’s necessarily as cut and dry as people are saying, “A james blake backing track”. There’s an 80s undercurrent similar to some of the darker Talk Talk stuff here that’s prevalent on most of Bon Ivers second album (i’m thinking Calgary). I think you’d be hard pressed to find a drum fill so glam as this in any James Blake song, along with the keyboard stab and the piano sound. I think it’s testament to how well done this track is, that i initially thought it sounded more Justin than James.

  15. No, I have to disagree with most of you folks. IMO it’s a really good, warm and multi-layered track of two of the hottest artists of this year. And, yes, “hot” in the sense of being sexually attracted to them as well cause I’ve had several wet dreams of both James and Justin. ;-) Not a Herculean masterpiece but a sultry musical love affair. Maybe more than just musically?

  16. Not greater than the sum.

  17. God, I would pay actual money to hear this without the autotune.

  18. the only thing good about this is the artwork

  19. Miles better than Matt+Kim+Soulja+Andrew, but still in my opinion the weakest of Bon Iver’s collaborations.

Anyone else want to hear more from Gayngs?

  20. It’s ok. But I’m not gonna lie, a little on the “meh” side. I’m not easily impressed. *Kanye Shrug*

  21. And when is Justin going to pick up the tempo in his music, enough of this slow shit. I can only take so much of it before it all starts to sound like a stream of yawning.

  22. Passety pass pass. Technology is a tool, not a crutch. Too bad Justin Vernon doesn’t quite seem to get that.

  23. More like James Bass.

  24. Justin Vernon and James Blake

    Bros 4 LIFE

  25. Two of the worst things going on in music right now join forces to make thousands upon thousands of wussy male yupsters weep like bitches after having sex.

  26. I love those twos so much (both are in my favorite albums of 2011), and I thought this would be mind-blowing gorgeous or something. After several spins, all I can say is the song is pretty bad.

Justin’s vocals are usually great, but somehow the way Blake produced them doesn’t quiet work. Drowned in the Klavierwerke-era beat, Justin sounds disconnected and “cold”. Meanwhile, Blake doesn’t really bring anything new to the table, production-wise, so I lost my interest really fast. The thing those two have in common is sometimes they create a “mood’ or probably an ambient effect (to me at least) and I can just let myself sink in. This song has none of that, and the melodies aren’t even pretty or memorable. I would like to hear those two beautiful voices harmonizing on a ballad though. With bass like Limit To Your Love, maybe.

  27. As a lover of minimalism, electronic music, and Justin’s voice (altered, too), I support this rather beguiling duo – I wish I could know the words…the one thing I do know, it it has an allure to me, which – though I can hear the disparaging comments ringing not-far behind – I can not deny.

  28. i do know the posted lyrics out in web world are not complete and I dare say, not correct – and I wish someone would try a little harder. Any takers?

  29. I’m in the woods…again…and this time, I want out.

  30. at least there’s one Bon Iver/Justin article that does not contain the words “Wisconsin” “cabin” or “isolated”.

that being said leave the autotune garbage to the minimally talented rappers….enough already.

  31. That’s a pretty bad-ass cover.

  32. God this is beautiful. A slow-burning, end of summer jam that’s beyond what I would expect out of these two together. I love Bon Iver but don’t care much for Mr. Blake, but his work on this track just sends it to the next level.

  33. *Typical stereogum reader blindly agrees with opinion in article.*

This song made my dog, myself, and my speakers sad.
