Muse’s new “Uprising” is attracting strong opinions, from you, and apparently from Fox News fearmonger Glenn Beck. Muse is one of his favorite bands, so he played and read the lyrics to the song on his radio show. We’re told this is Muse news you can use.

This is not news. I heard Hitler likes Animal Collective.

    • Anon  |   Posted on Aug 13th, 2009 0

@easy: Sorry, Nazi Nazi here. Let’s compare Glenn Beck and Hitler here:

      # Awesome outdoor public rallies? NO
      # Built a Wehrmacht? NO
      # Invaded Poland yet? I THOUGHT NOT
      # Tiny Moustache? NOPE

      • easy  |   Posted on Aug 14th, 2009 0

I’m struggling to find your point anon. Are you saying Glenn Beck is somehow “less awesome” than Hitler? I’m assuming your joking obviously, but still, when your list includes “awesome rallies” attempts at humor fall sadly short. Maybe I should have said Nancy Pelosi? Same basic idea.

“With all the green belts wrapped around our minds
And endless red tape to keep the truth confined”

This is a line from the song “Uprising”. I think its pretty apparent that Matthew Bellamy is opposed to the neo-enviro fascists like Obama and his czars and the like that want to make our society take a step back in our progression to “save the planet”. If not for this song lyric, there are also several other statements that he has made about the subject of government running everything and thinking that they are better equiped to make your decisions for you. This, for your information is a conservative view. Let the people be free to govern themselves.

“he has made about the subject of government running everything and thinking that they are better equiped to make your decisions for you. This, for your information is a conservative view. Let the people be free to govern themselves.”

This is not a conservative view this is a libertarian view. Conservatives haven’t thought this way in a veeerry long time. Conservatives say they want to have small government and don’t want to interfere with your life but what they mean is they don’t want to interfere with business. They want to control you socially. They want to impose religious doctrine on you. They want to make sure homosexuals cannot marry. They want to take away your right to privacy for what they say is for our safety. Did you feel safer under Bush? I felt like everyone wanted to kill us not just terrorists

      • He’s clearly not a fan of you stereotypical, irrational conservatives.

Crazy conspiracy theories about totalitarian regimes crushing the common man — it’s no wonder Beck likes them, it’s basically like listening to Republicans at a town hall meeting.

  4. Glenn Beck loves the lyrics, but he’s not so crazy about the music.

  5. I bet he would just love Take a Bow.

what i can’t stand is how now all of Glenn Beck’s supporters are going around claiming the song as some sort of anti-Obama anthem when it wasn’t even written about American politics in the first place! and they’re heavily anti-republican anyway, so all those squares are looking for an anthem in the wrong place.

  13. Hey, you guys took my advice! Now give me a job.

  15. gunmetal  |   Posted on Aug 20th, 2009 0

Well said anti-kysrsoze! Beck has an opinion and states it. Instead of recklessly screaming “racist hate monger” (essentially that’s what your post is doing), back it up with some examples.

Some other posts said that Republicans are taking this and using it almost as a theme song: Good on! It works brilliantly whether or not Matt meant it too.

You are in denial, my friend. It is funny to see people like you, wanting to comment on something you know absolutely nothing about. I saw many people just like you who remained in denial even after we were already Communists in Cuba. Why don’t you start asking questions like, how is Obama our President when he would not have passed an FBI background check due to all his radical associations? Why is Obama friends with a Communist like VanJones, who now enjoys the title of Green Jobs Czar. Why is Obama surrounded by radical left extremists some of whom also happen to be ex-convicts? Find out who his friends are and you will find out something about the man. Don’t simply support him because he looks or acts cool. Ask yourself why Communist Hugo Chavez is now quoted as saying things like “Hey, Obama has just nationalized nothing more, nothing less than General Motors. Comrade Obama!!! Fidel, be careful … or we are going to end up to his right!” — Americans are so blind, it is truly frightening to watch! Understand, it is no longer Democrats against Republicans or the opposite — we are now in survival mode against the Communist left and they are taking over faster than you can count to three. This is your future, and the future of America. Wake up and smell the roses or you will be left to wonder what happened while you were watching American Idol, you idiot!!! I come from a Communist country and I can tell you — freedom of speech and “freedom” as you know it today in America will be a thing of the past when this is all over unless you start asking the hard questions before it gets any worse but your window of time is closing fast!

      Ubkei,
You’re full of shit. There is no country where communism is working “splendidly”. North Korea? Cambodia (or whats left of it)? China? Soviet Union? Oh, they don’t exist anymore. Ukraine? Ditto. The list goes on. You lie, sir

    Kudos to Jonathan’s comment

And Ubkei, you may have your opinions of whatever country you came from, but I have never seen a case of communism working “splendidly.” Human beings are extremely independent creatures. Communism only works if violently enforced, or if we had the minds of ants. I’d like to see a case where I’m proven wrong, but I just haven’t seen the evidence.

  21. Kyle  |   Posted on Sep 17th, 2009 0

This is pathetic, Glenn Beck is simply illustrating his ignorance by supporting an album designed to promote uprising against bureaucratic bigots such as Glenn Beck and those he supports. Matt Bellamy wrote this album mainly aimed at the political situation in Great Britain at the moment, and has shown very very left wing tendencies in his political viewpoints.

“These wars can never be won, does anyone know or care how they begun?”

Hell listen to Take a Bow, clearly displays Matt’s hatred for Beck’s ‘idol.’

Thanks to Glenn Beck’s endorsement of Muse pretty soon the same inbred idiots who actually watch his show are going to be running around singing lyrics in which they neither understand nor comprehend.

    • Scott  |   Posted on Nov 3rd, 2009 0

Wow, your ridiculous. Who are you referring to as Beck’s idol? You probably don’t even watch the show, just bash him. None of you idiots who do this ever show any facts or proof to back these claims. It pisses me off.

I wish we could take all of you idiots, put you in your own little country, let you run it the way you want to, and see what happens.

And your taking the lyrics to Muse’s song into the weirdest context. I see them talking about corruption, and “becoming, contrary to what we want” (being misrepresented by politicians). Your being egotistical thinking it’s about America’s politics.

When it comes down to it, I don’t think you guys are bad guys, you’ve just been led to believe that the government’s job is to take care of us and babysit us all. It’s not.

I want to live in a country where if you want to improve your quality life, you just have to work harder (instead of crying to the government). I want to live in a country that doesn’t take 20% of your income and use it on inefficient programs. I want to live in a country where we are allowed to bear arms for our own self defense(instead of being defenseless and relying on local police who, believe it or not, aren’t omnipotent)

    • I’m an inbred huh? You wrote a decent sized comment but you didn’t say a damn thing. All you had was a couple insults and that makes you intelligent? Have you actually seen the show? Maybe you should stop listening to the left-wing lies they feed you and try listening to a side that uses facts to back up their views, not lies, insults, and incivility!!

  22. Danny  |   Posted on Sep 17th, 2009 0

Matt Bellamy is notoriously anti-conservative and expresses liberal view points in everything at least from Black Holes and Revelations onwards (although anti-religiousness can be found in every album). The fact that anyone would believe Muse are some anti-Obama, tea party supporters are complete idiots who either have never really listened to Muse before or are just that stupid. Muse is very liberal. Get over it, it’s one of the things that makes them amazing.

P.s. I watch Glenn Beck’s program every day, and yes he is a fear-mongering, lying, ignorant, xenophobic jackass who’s sole mission in life is to spread misinformation under the guise of patriotism. Anyone who believes a single thing he says or honestly believe all of that conservative shouting points are a bunch of lunatics.

  23. Beck is a race baiter? Are you fucking kidding me? This said in the same comment thread where people repeatedly call him a racist (based on what exactly?). The guy’s no straight journalist, and he’s too weird for my taste, but he’s not even the worst “journalist” on television. Some of you are way too fucking partisan to be thinking for yourselves.

The Democrats don’t give a shit about you either. It’s time everyone woke up to that.

    Maria:
Well said. My parents and grandparents all came from communist Cuba, where my grandfather was threatened by Castro himself, who told him that speaking against his government “might cost him his tongue in the street.”
Ubkei: I agree with Jason. I don’t know WHAT communist country you came from; I’m dying to hear it. I’ve never heard of a successful communist country. To be clear, my definition of successful communism is “communism in which no one is ridiculed, imprisoned, tortured, or killed for opposing the government.” So, if you can find me an example of THAT country, I’d REALLY like to know more about it. Communism is responsible for the deaths of 100+ MILLION people. That’s nearly 17 TIMES as many people as Hitler and the Nazis killed. And by the way, the Nazi party was called the “National SOCIALIST Worker’s Party.” So if you want to expand the death toll, you could say, a combination of communism and socialism are responsible for 106+ MILLION deaths. I recently saw a sign that I incidentally would like to purchase. It said sarcastically,

“Communism has killed over 100 Million People. Let’s give it another try!”

That is the perfect representation of the tone the world SHOULD take when discussing communism in practice (utter disgust and fear), vs. the tone that politicians ON BOTH SIDES of the aisle often take (that, on paper, it’s great).

By the way, I agree with Jason on another point: Muse may be anti-Republican party, but they are very much in support of the concept of the Democratic-REPUBLIC (the government that our Founding Fathers formed for us). You CAN dislike, or even hate, the Republican party (which I do, as they have betrayed me). You can also dislike, or even hate, the Democratic party at the same time (which I do, because they have betrayed the American people consistently over the last century). You can HATE BOTH PARTIES and STILL stand for liberty and freedom in this country. I am a LIBERTARIAN; I believe in individual liberty. I don’t care if gays want to marry, that’s their business. But I also don’t want the government telling me that it’s “safer” for them to restrict my guns, when EVERY MAJOR STUDY OF CRIME has shown that states with lesser gun restrictions have lower violent crime rates, whereas states with greater gun restrictions have higher violent crime rates (think: Georgia vs. California).

    • Scott  |   Posted on Nov 3rd, 2009 0

WOW. Amen man, you have just stated the exact position I hold on all of this.

So i’m over all that two party crap. I would like to see a libertarian in office. Small government, conservative with money (get us out of this HUGE debt) let us have the freedoms that we are entitled to from the constitution.

  26. Devil's Advocate  |   Posted on Sep 18th, 2009 0

@gunmetal: Republicans are taking this and using it almost as a theme song: Good on! It works brilliantly whether or not Matt meant it too.

The problem with using Muse song’s as a conservative anthem is that you can interpret the song just as easily as a liberal anthem for revolution/change…

    “The paranoia is in bloom”
    – Hysteria about how health care reform is socialist, paranoia about how America is being “taken away”, etc.

    “the PR transmissions will resume
    They’ll try to push drugs
Keep us all dumbed down and hope that
We will never see the truth around”
    – Once you interpret the opening line differently you can argue that the media brainwashing is conservative dribble, not liberal drivel

    “Another promise, another scene, another
A package not to keep us trapped in greed
With all the green belts wrapped around our minds
And endless red tape to keep the truth confined”
    – You can argue this is about Bush era secrecy

    “They will not force us
    They will stop degrading us
    They will not control us
    We will be victorious”
    – The rising of the middle class, working class, common man, etc. against the powerful lobbies in Washington… i.e. YES WE CAN

    “Interchanging mind control
Come let the revolution take it’s toll if you could
Flick the switch and open your third eye, you’d see that
We should never be afraid to die”
    – Same as above

“Rise up and take the power back, it’s time that
The fat cats had a heart attack, you know that
Their time is coming to an end
We have to unify and watch our flag ascend”
    – You could say the heart attack should have been the market slapping Wall Street for its own errors… or you could argue it’s a call to dismantle capitalism itself. It’s time the capitalist fat cat to come to an end.

  27. The Voice of Sanity  |   Posted on Sep 19th, 2009 0

Man, I gotta laugh reading some of the borderline retarded comments on this blog, throwing around the word ‘fascist’ like they know what it means. Look it up on Wikipedia for goodness sake, help educate yourself.

If Muse espouses any political message, it follows more on Libertarian like one person mentioned.

Now, I do listen to Glenn Beck on the radio occasionally and find that some of his view points make a lot of sense if you have been on the planet long enough to see the different types of governments the world has been exposed to over the years. I am not big on the God talk, but I can appreciate how it reflects on the values of the original founding of the USA.

I can tell you for sure that Beck is no sycophant of GW Bush. He is quick to point out his faults. If you actually listen to the radio show he will call GWB to the mat for things he believes he did wrong, like the bailout of AIG, the precursor to the worthless ‘stimulus’ that couldn’t stimulate .

The government establishment is corrupt and if we open our eyes, we can see it around us in all political parties in all countries. We have become too complacent and need to hold our elected officials accountable for their actions, not continue to vote them in because they are the lesser of two evils or some other cop-out like that.

    • autopilot  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2009 0

He just didn’t say anything when it counted: when Bush was still in power. At that time, he was just as apologetic and sycophantic as the rest of the lemmings on the right. Beck is a clown.

  28. Clinton Cooper  |   Posted on Sep 20th, 2009 0

For those of you who said that this is about Obama, you are wrong. Europe is well ahead of the U.S. in terms of their battles with Socialism, Communism and Fascism. Rigth now there is a strong Communist movement sweeping Europe. Working class people are fighting the governement and rich greedy capitalists. Here is the problem, the anger is over capitalism. Those who are violently fightening for revolution are communists through and through. Ever heard of the ‘Comming Insurrection’? This is a Communist Manifesto…

The Muse do not preach religion or preach any political philosophy except questioning those in power and bringing forth the truth as well as the power of freedom over control. Now if you want to say that the current movement in Euope is not about religion and to question government then sure the Muse are for it. But the political resistence that is being pushed by the “Comming Insurrecton” is just another form of government control. Therefore if the Muse are singing about this, then they don’t understand what the hell is going on.

OR maybe they do, and they do understand the power of the individual and the power for true freedom from government and Tyranny. If this is the case, then they are Libertarians and hold the same ideals as Glenn Beck. If they do not (which I don’t believe because they seem to be failry smart people) then they are misguided Communists.

By disavowing themselves from Glenn they can sell their music to both sides (they dont have to pick a side), but they can also use his name and popualrity as well as attention to sell a few more records. Afterall, isn’t that Capitalism….

  29. clinton Cooper  |   Posted on Sep 20th, 2009 0

    From matt’s website…

    http://www.museband.net/band.shtml

“We’re not an intensely political band or anything, but when things like that are happening, you can’t ignore it and it influences the way you feel about life and the world.

‘it creates feelings of mistrust for the people in power, feelings of extreme mistrust of what is the media, government, secret government etc – that feeling of helplessness, that’s where the more extreme moments of fear and panic and apocalyptic feelings are coming from. How that feeds into the other personal angle is that I suppose in that situation, you look at the things that are really important to you, friends, family, freedom of thought or whatever, and maybe you start to realise the importance of those things that maybe you didn’t see before…’”

What was quoted by Matt is exactly what the American Libertarian Party strives for. And what Glenn Beck strives for.

    http://www.lp.org/introduction/what-…ertarian-party

    • autopilot  |   Posted on Sep 21st, 2009 0

Glenn Beck is a nutcase who completely changes his views according to who’s in power. He has no credibility, nor do the brainless lemmings who follow him.

  30. This is pointless.

  31. Clinton Cooper  |   Posted on Sep 22nd, 2009 0

Pointless because you guys cannot make a valid case for your point of view? You are wrong and have been proven wrong. In the court of ideas you lose because you have no intellectual backing or support. You who want control and tyranny will be defeated. You project your calls of us being lemmings because you have nothing to stand on except the idea that you are nothing and serve no purpose and are just occupying space until you die. I feel sad for you. In the song Bliss Matt talks about how he envies those who are free and stand for something and hold onto something.

Freedom comes from the responsibility one has for their own actions. You can call Glenn a fear monger, But the fact that you believe he is a fear monger means that he causes you to feel fear. If you are afraid and fear of the consequences of your actions you will never live in freedom. As such, you hate him because he exposes you for who you really are, a scared immature lonely poor soul. He shows you that everything you believe in, such as a nanny state (complete government control), global warming, and even rejection of God and natural laws reveals that you fear this world. In fact rejection of God is the ultimate fear in that you have to reject him because if he does exist you know you are screwed because of the complete and utter depravity that you hold in your heart and minds. Your guilt and feelings of despair cling to you like a chain that will never be broken. The only way to deal with it then is to lash out in a childish and immature hateful manner (further exposing your weakness).

I will tell you this, because of my belief in God, I know no fear. We all make mistakes. There is no doubt. No one is perfect. But I do not have any fear in my life. This is what makes you so hateful towards me and Glenn Beck. Such as the song Bliss, you are so envious of this. But the thing is you can find this if you just look for it.

  32. Ethan  |   Posted on Sep 23rd, 2009 0

It is fairly obvious that Bellamy is a Libertarian. As is Glenn Beck. What’s wrong with that? You have to look at “Uprising” in a UK context, not a US one. Leftist, Obama-esque parties have BEEN in power in the UK for some time under Gordon Brown. This song is a call to return back to more fundamental systems with LESS government meddling. Everyone has this wrong.

  33. David  |   Posted on Oct 5th, 2009 0

Glenn Beck = fearmonger? If he is a fearmonger what the hell is the fat ass slob Micheal Moore? Or for that matter Obama himself. The extreme left wing nuts try to scare us all the time with shoving it down our throats that we need government healthcare, cap and trade and the false claims of global warming and that BS about how we have too much carbon dioxide in our air. (FYI: plants need CO2 to grow and produce O2.)
And as for calling people like Glenn Beck Nazi’s, you are only showing your own ignorance. Read some history books.
Nazi is short for Nationalsozialismus, which is German for National Socialism. National Socialism believes in things like government run healthcare, government regulated business and state run media.
One of Hitlers first moves as ruler was to help out failing businesses with government funds. Sound familiar? General Motors anyone?
So take your comparisons of the right with Nazi’s and shove it, the same thing can be said about the left.
I used to be a fan of Muse, but thanks to their asinine complaint about Beck being a fan, I will no longer support them or buy their music. They should have just kept their mouths shut.

  34. Susan  |   Posted on Oct 20th, 2009 0

GBeck only likes it because he has no fucking idea what Muse is about.

    • Scott  |   Posted on Nov 3rd, 2009 0

      What is muse about, buddy?

And what do you think Glenn Beck is about? Do you even know anything about Glenn Beck? Also, before you make any claims, are you prepared to back them up? That’s all I ask.

  35. Mike  |   Posted on Oct 23rd, 2009 0

    You’re describing republicans. Not conservatives.

  36. Scott  |   Posted on Nov 3rd, 2009 0

Not really sure why they would ask Beck to retract his statement.

Probably because alot of Muse’s target audience fall’s in the liberal college student audience, who interpret the lyrics differently. Muse doesn’t want to give their real opinion on the subject. Why can’t people make their own interpretations and keep them to themselves instead of trying to push them on others?

But honestly, if they are a UK band, and are anti-government, look who’s in power over there and then try to tell me they are against capitalism and small government.

  37. Steve Stephan  |   Posted on Jan 1st, 2010 0

Um, Matthew Bellamy is listed as a Georgist, which follows a single tax on land as a means by which to pay for government. Sounds similar to the Fair Tax that Neal Boortz espouses whom is a libertarian. Personally, I like the idea of the conservatives within the Republican party utilizing Muse’s Uprising as a means to combat politically against the neocons and RINO’s within the party. Perhaps getting back to the real grass roots of the party and shaking things up. I’m a conservative Republican and have been since I turned 18 years old 22 years ago. I did not like George H.W. Bush nor did I really care for his son after September 11, 2001 as they both increased taxes far too much and W’ just went along with the Democratic majority in congress as long as he could continue to wag the dog for daddy.

McCain was a good choice for president, but 20 years too late for him and his idealogy has changed from conservative to a more moderate centered point of view.

As far as those throwing fascism around in regard to Glenn Beck or any conservative, you really should look up what fascism is or how it has been applied historically.

Fascism is run by a dictator whom seizes the running of Corporations within it’s borders and the only person that I see whom has done that took control of the Student Loan programs, took over automobile manufacturing, took over the mortgage industry via TARP, and is currently merging two bills into one to take over the healthcare industry.

You could also liken his work prior to election as a community organizer with Acorn as the same strong arm tactics that was utilizing in Germany’s Enabling Act on March 23, 1933.

Both Fascism and Nazism have a strong foundation is leftist socialism and nationalism, and most of you Democrats whom have done nothing but espouse anger at Glenn Beck over liking the band that you like, and I like, well, you really seem to be the product of the government run school system which I’ve seem personally downgraded and dumbed down into a truly serf producing workshop.

Personally, my favorite part of the Uprising song is, It’s time to unify and watch our flag ascend. It truly is that time. Have a great day.

  38. I can’t believe you people take a band like Muse seriously as if their lyrics aren’t on the level of a 6th grade Writing class. “The fat cats had a heart attack…”, wow, a work of true literary genius, another Dickens. And I love the line about “They’ll try to push drugs” as if there is some big conspiracy to put a crack pipe in your hands – you’re doing it to yourselves you ignorant jerk. Man, I am sick of “rock stars” who think they know anything. Shut the hell up and just sing.

    • If you’d do your research you’d realize that the band isn’t that into politics and that they aren’t trying to send any message to start any kind of a movement. These topics only come up in the lyrics because it interests them. You’re entirely too confrontational about the band because they just make music for the love of it.

P.s. If you’re so knowledgeable about literature then how about you write a song so provocative and popular. Can’t do it? Aww I’m sorry, seems like you (should) have at least found some respect for these artists.

  39. And Scott – I suppose Churchill was a “fearmonger” too. And what is this “we’re told” crap you pretentious ass?

  40. The subject comes up at 4:20.

I think it’s pretty clear they’re not so excited that the Glennster did this.
Also, Beck clearly lied about them asking to retract it.
How ’bout a little more research you guys?

    • Plus they’re heavily influence by bands like Rage Against The Machine, which I don’t think the Conservatives/Republicans are such big fans of, correct?

It’s kinda hard to miss him saying, “[they] wouldn’t have been too keen on it”, and sarcastically that Beck’s “not crazy”.

This just goes to show how disillusioned most Right-wingers are in America these days.
