Bon Iver

Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon doesn’t exactly carry himself like a rap nerd, and it’s not like he found space for a Cormega verse on “Calgary.” But over the past year, the man has participated in the making of two excellent big-ticket rap records, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Watch The Throne. What have you done? That’s right. Nothing.

So it makes sense, in a roundabout sort of way, that Rolling Stone asked Vernon to list his five favorite rap lyrics. They’re a pretty random jumble! They do, however, only include one song that featured Vernon himself, which actually counts as modesty by rap standards. Check out Vernon’s list below.

01 The Fugees – “Family Business”
02 Busta Rhymes – “Iz They Wildin Wit Us & Gettin Rowdy Wit Us?” (Feat. Mystikal)
03 Pharoahe Monch – “Agent Orange”
04 Jay-Z – “A Star Is Born” (Feat. J. Cole)
05 Kanye West – “Monster” (Feat. Bon Iver, Rick Ross, Jay-Z & Nicki Minaj)
(via Rolling Stone, where you can also read Vernon’s commentary on his picks)

Admit it: If you had a million guesses, you still wouldn’t have come up with that Busta/Mystikal track.

  1. I started out as a hater on the comments section of this blog, and now I’m a lover. But every time you publish one of Bon Iver’s lists the hater in me gets a little restless.

  2. Apparently, Justin listens to shitty rap.
