Whoops, looks like two cultures just got shocked. Obviously that headline is a joke! Except that maybe it isn’t? Rumors had been swirling about Thom Yorke and Bon Iver penning songs for the The Twilight Saga: Teen Vampires In Love Some More soundtrack, and those rumors are confirmed with today’s OST tracklist, exclusively revealed by MySpace. But you already knew that because MySpace is your homepage. And hey, this thing looks good, like mini-Dark Was The Night good.

In addition to Thom’s new tune “Hearing Damage,” and Bon Iver’s duet with St. Vincent’s face on a song called “Rosyln,” Twilight scored previously unreleased tracks from Grizzly Bear and the Killers. Atlantic, in conjunction with soundtrack curator Alexandra Patsavas’s Chop Shop, will release the album, and so there’s a correlatively strong showing of Atlantic-affiliated artists (Death Cab, Lykke Li, and Muse, the lone holdover from the first film’s OST) and a Patsavas pet (her Chop Shop puts out Anya Marina who made the cut). You’ve heard Death Cab’s “Meet Me On The Equinox.” Here’s a few more reasons you suddenly love vampires:

01 Death Cab For Cutie – “Meet Me On The Equinox”
02 Band Of Skulls – “Friends”
03 Thom Yorke- “Hearing Damage”
04 Lykke Li – “Possibility”
05 The Killers – “A White Demon Love Song”
06 Anya Marina – “Satellite Heart”
07 Muse – “I Belong To You (New Moon Remix)”
08 Bon Iver and St. Vincent – “Rosyln”
09 Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – “Done All Wrong”
10 Hurricane Bells – “Monsters”
11 Sea Wolf – “The Violet Hour”
12 Ok Go – “Shooting The Moon”
13 Grizzly Bear (Feat. Victoria Legrand) – “Slow Life”
14 Editors – “No Sound But The Wind”
15 Alexandre Desplat – “New Moon (The Meadow)”

The Twilight Saga: New Moon soundtrack is out 10/20 via Atlantic, and the soundtrack artists will tour Hot Topic outlets nationwide. As if you needed another reason to go there after school.

I gotta fess up. When I first heard about some of my favorite artists being on the New Moon soundtrack, I was pretty pissed. And then I replied, spilling a ton of my indie pretentiousness into it. I must admit, I would totally rather my sister listen to St.Vincent than the Jonas Brothers. I still think Twilight is shit, but I guess more people liking good music isn’t the worst thing that could happen in the world. I think one of the reasons why people are getting all heated about his is because they don’t want to be associated with people who like the music just because it was in Twilight.

Now that I look at the situation more, I actually see how this could be an okay thing. If Twilight has some good music, maybe more films (hopefully better) will start featuring some awesome indie artists. Its not exactly a new idea, there are plenty of movies I’ve seen with good music (like Half-Nelson) but this is one of the first generally mainstream movies with some decent music in it.

Really? you’re all getting your knickers in a twist over a movie that probably won’t suck as hard as you want it to, will have really good background music, an will expose a lot of really good, deserving artists to a wider fanbase? Yes, the rabid fangirls will eat this up like candy, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t connect with the music or the people who make it. And, since this big, mainstream movie is exposing these bands, maybe they’ll get more press, have more success, and stick around longer. If all you care about is that your cred is being ruined, maybe YOU’RE into the music for the wrong reasons. I’m kind of confused as to which is better: discovering good music from a mainstream, widely seen source, or getting upset because you won’t be the only kid at school with a Grizzly Bear ticket stub. Grow up.

  3. HAHA the comments are hilarious!

    I am officially sick.

    I mean, really? REALLY?
Do we really want people like “that” listening to our music?
    Did that sound bad?

    I hope it did.

This so-called franchise needs to be taken down.

    And fast.

i, myself, being only sixteen, can’t comprehend why a majority of elders in this room cry bloodey murder when the youth discovers an intimate music genre. for me, the thing that frustrates me beyond belief is the proposed audience this soundtrack will appeal to. no-one understands me, or at least in my school, because i appreciate things like indie or folk and always carry around a book. whether this so called “scene” gains popularity, i will continue to be myself regardless. now, advertising to a group of individuals i consider blatantly ignorant in the aspect of such artistic matters, and possibly converting them, that is what bothers me. in my opinion, they will never be themselves as hard as the try to convert to whatever scene. it’s all pretend from a social standpoint. so the very people i secretly despise pretend to be interested in this “scene”, when the “indie” scene isn’t a scene at all. it’s personality, at least for me.

There is so much hate here. It’s like a townhall meeting! Personally I am glad that all this is happening. Culture/mainstream/individualism/21century, all this crap needs to be talked about just like the damn health care, immigration, environment. No one talks about CULTURE and SOCIETY! Indie Music/Urban/AA/fixgear/urbanization of global society all freaking connected by TWILIGHT!HAHAHAHA I love it! Even Obama was criticized for wearing baggy jeans when he through the first pitch at a baseball game. How beautiful. 2012. the end. but before that I am going to wear my Edward Cullen aka Robby Pat’s shirt to the Grizzly Bear concert in LA!

im with nick jonas (spy) these bands are not even indie like that, vecka is ALL over the radio, because its good, and everybody and there mom loves bon iver: because he’s good too, i mean these are the kinds of artists that BELONG on a bull shit tween movie soundtrack: up and comers, accessible, lovable tune-masters. its not a crazy business strategy by any stretch of the imagination. nobodys surprised about phoenix in a commercial because its no thing/ hell i even heard a mae shi song on cartoon network!

wow you are all so very uptight about your “scene”… Everything in trend is rotation, great you’re looking for the next Nirvana but welcome to the world, Nirvana is not underground or scene by any means, the name is as household as high school musical! You are all as hung up on trend as Paris frikken Hilton… you’re trend is “look at me, I know about this indie band that you don’t, I am way cooler”. WTF!? Do you think your precious bands didn’t know what kind of film they were choosing to make synonymous with their music. I say- listen to the music that speaks to your soul when it speaks to your soul. Not because it’s underground and that supposedly makes it great. The entire indie movement is juxtaposed by it’s followers, how can you be so trend driven while pretending you don’t give a rats ass…

i read all four of the twilight series. i also love some of the artists on this “hated” sountrack. there are people who exist that like both. who cares about being labeled, damn indies/hipsters.

  13. ally  |   Posted on Oct 4th, 2009

ok so i am getting really pissed because there are actually some people out there who listened to this music before they even heard of Twilight and started liking it! did you know that twilight actually used to be really indie too before they started making the movies? the books had a very loyal fanbase and those fans had exactly the same reaction to everyone finding out about it and suddenly loving it!!!
but instead of discussing all these stupid labels like indie and underground and worrying about how your “scene/community” is getting infiltrated (that is just paranoid!) be fucking happy for your supposed favourite artists… at least now they wont have such a hard time of making a living which will make it easier for them to keep making the great music we all love…. so just get over yourselves and enjoy the music!
and please stop talking about Nirvana. sorry to burst a bubble here but it really doesnt get anymore mainstream than Nirvana… and i think by now Radiohead is probably just as indie as Nirvana… but does it really matter? it still sounds great or doesn’t it?
and i admit i’m a little glad about this development since the first soundtrack was pretty shitty except for The Black Ghosts, Iron and Wine and maybe the Robert Pattinson songs and no i am not crazy in “luv” with him and i’ve never even been in a hot topic store and i dont think i will go in there even if BRMC were to play in one (too crammed, shitty acoustics no thanks) although i do highly doubt that they would play a gig there!
anyway… we should all just stop this pointless judging it doesnt lead anywhere! what’s done is done…

My argument with this is not “oh no people are gonna like my favorite indie bands!! whine whine whine!!” it’s that Twilight is utter shit. It promotes awful, awful message (especially New Moon, IMO the worst in the series): stalking = love, if your ex leaves you he’ll come back if you try to commit suicide, your significant other should be allowed to control you, I could go on and on! Bella and Edward have one of the unhealthiest relationships depicted in modern fiction, not to mention all the problems I have with the werewolves and the imprinting. The fact that young girls flock to these horrible messages in droves makes me worry for what kind of generation is growing up here… I’m not a super feminist by any means but I find Twilight really disturbing.
That is what bothers me… not that these artists decided to associate themselves with a movie… but that they choose to associate themselves with – Twilight -. It shows that they accept/condone the messages present in the books, or didn’t care to investigate them before they signed on to the project. That’s not acceptable to me, and I have really lost all respect for the bands on this soundtrack.

  15. I’m totally going to lose any indie cred I (did not) have (in the first place), but I like Twilight. I liked it before it turned into a movie, became freakishly successful, and adored / raped by millions of pre-teens the world over. For the record, I didn’t think the first movie was all that great, but I’m hoping for the sequel to be better. I’m excited that there are so many great artists on the New Moon soundtrack because it gives me hope that the movie will be better. AND it’ll promote the artists we love. Like someone said, Twilight was once indie itself. Has it jumped ship with all of its success? I don’t know. Just because something is popular doesn’t make it bad.

Quit losing your shit over nothing.

  16. I’m still not sure what to make of this thing… if i should worry about Grizzly Bear (the one band that I really, truly, adore) being played in the backdrop of sexist reality shows on MTV (since they no longer play videos) , if that makes me a bad person (probably does), if this music goes over the collective heads of the Twilight fandom and it turns out i had nothing to worry about, if this is just a way to get back at music pirating…

whatever. I’m not gonna waste time over-thinking this.

But one thing that really bothers me is that this Stephanie Myer chick is a super religious, misogynistic, delirious wackjob, which (if you read between the lines) is pretty apparent in her writing. The fact that she’s so popular with young girls is really unsettling…and I know that if I was a musician, I wouldn’t wanna take part in ANYthing involving her. Just my 2 cents.

Why are you complaining? Aren’t you forgetting the most basic fact here? the artists that appear on this album AGREED to be on the album. They didn’t have to agree to it, but they’ve probably realised the massive financial gains they’ll get from being associated with a film that has got EVERYONE buzzing. And you cannot deny that hate it, or love it, the whole Twilight saga has got everybody talking. On a personal note I wish I had had such a good avenue for hearing great music when I was 13, instead of having to listen to cheesy pop because that was all that was around.
These artists are not idiots. They’ve realised that being involved with this album will probably bring them 10 times the money they maybe made by releasing a whole album, they’re also very aware of the long term benefits that being involved with this project can be. Damned hipsters need to remember that for their beloved band to continue existing in this extremely cut throat business of music, they need money. It’s all very well having the loyal followers, but they don’t exactly bring in the vast thousands that are needed to stay afloat nowadays, whereas this project does. Maybe a few “cool” bands that aren’t so financially savvy need to split up so the hipsters can realise just how much exposure can help ANY band!
