I am also excited to check out this Ron Miles album. I would also love to hear a Bill Frisell / Juicy J mashup (ala Madlib) "Blues Dream and Lean"
Can't wait to check this out! FYI also don't miss the "Covers Vol. 2" from Two Minutes to Late Night, as it's only available for 24 hours - more than worth the price of admission for the "Running Up That Hill" cover IMHO https://twominutestolatenight.bandcamp.com/

Awesome write-up of an amazing album - def an AOTY contender and maybe an early contender for the eventual decades-end lists. (Assuming we make it that far!) Black lives matter, fuck the police. Also, y'all should check this out and consider joining if your living under curfew (or even if you're not!): https://www.facebook.com/events/1265600633789539
gotta love a "libertarian" who supports militarizing the police and the President sending in the military to quash local protests
I have a similar reaction to superdonkeypiss - I mean, "Benji" was my favorite album of 2014, and I could sing similar praise about his Red House Painter work and the like. But it reaches a certain point with someone like Kozelek when I feel you have to ask yourself is it really worth the personal investment. Like, its one thing to embody every worst rambling boomer stereotype in your lyrics and song structure, but to actually be outright misogynistic at times and hostile hostile towards journalists and other artists for no good reason whatsoever makes it really hard to *want* to continue to enjoy what he's putting out. I honestly feel similar about listening to new Mark Kozelek as I do about certain black metal artists - like, maybe I'm missing something that sounds really good, but do I even want to bother supporting this asshole?
Sounds dope. That typo in the header makes my teeth hurt though
awesome, thanks for the tips! And thanks for the reminder that Live After Death is amazing
Who downvoted this? This is great!!
What's your go-to for recorded live sets? So lately I've been really craving live music (go figure!), which has led me to dig up a whole bunch of live sets I've had on my hard drive as well as dig up a bunch of new favorites from nyctaper. Several of these are favorites from shows that I saw in person (like Bonnaroo sets from MMJ, Radiohead, and Tom Petty), but I've also been discovering contemporary classic live albums and sets (like Tame Impala's "Live Versions" and pretty much anything from My Bloody Valentine that's come out since 2009). Some nyctaper highlights btw include the Songs: Molina tribute set, Waxahatchee, Dinosaur Jr, and Tortoise. What's your go-to live music recording?
Damn, shots fired. Someone mentioned in the rap column that if Tom wants to throw down with another music writer that Mikey Nels would be the go-to, so I guess this can count as Round One. I have to admit though that while I've never really gotten into Sleater-Kinney, I consider Julian Casablancas as one of the best writers of his generation (which to a considerable extent overlaps with my generation as well). So consider me very intrigued to give this album a listen, which I guess is a good thing!
Yesss I'm very excited for this release! "Lore" was my favorite album of 2015 (and that was a year with a lot of standout releases). Just a great band sitting at that sweet spot between psychedelic rock and progressive metal. Few do it better than they do right now.
Charli gets my vote, I just love how effortlessly she is able to stay ahead of the curve (which IMHO sets her apart from Grimes, even though I love and respect both as artists). Also can we talk about how awesome that cover art is (at the top, not the youtube video)? Finally something good, quarantine-related.
And on the flip side: congrats to ADMYR for one of the worst comments in Stereogum history. This pandemic really brings out the best and worst in people, doesn't it?
Metal-wise, I'd say Sweven, Psychotic Waltz, Afterbirth, and Mare Cognitum/Spectral Lore are my Q1 AOTY contenders
FWIW I've been finding myself listening to a lot of funeral doom (mostly Esoteric's "A Pyrrhic Existence" - 2019 just could not contain that one) and William Basinki, both "The Disintegration Loops" and the new one, "Hymns of Oblivion" he put out. (If you've yet to check him out, now's as good a time as any I'd say.) Also been getting lots of action out of Waxahatchee, Dogleg, The Weeknd, Tame Impala, and Caroline Rose, and have been spending money on bandcamp to try and support artists I care about.
Holy hell, franciskeats cleaning up this week with the A+++ comment game. Be well everyone!
The same people who believe Covid-19 is a hoax are also the same people who believe the Sandy Hook shooting was a hoax. So there's a real lack of reason with these people.
Thirded!! Welcome back, Doug! \m/\/m/
I can't speak for Job for a Cowboy per se, but as a metalhead who came of age during the aughts (arguably the darkest/leanest years in metal's relatively short history), I do get the sense that metalcore/deathcore is making something of a comeback, or is at least gaining/securing respectability. Biggest example of this in recent memory IMHO is the latest album from Fit for an Autopsy ("The Sea of Tragic Beasts" - def worth checking out if you haven't, no pig squeals that I recall). Andrew Rothmund at Invisible Oranges has been giving a lot of positive coverage to that sort of music (which I don't really follow tbh) - might be worth checking over there to get more of a sense.
