Reunited Nirvana To Perform With Paul McCartney Tonight
Among the many types of rock-band reunions, there are a few notable ones: The reunions we all wanted that end up being worthy of our interest (Dinosaur Jr., Mission Of Burma); the reunions we all wanted that end up being kind of a bummer (Jesus & Mary Chain, Pavement IMO), the reunions we’ve been clamoring for since the dawn of the Internet that will just never happen (the Smiths, the original Guns ‘N Roses lineup), and the reunions that literally CANNOT happen, ever (the Beatles, Nirvana). Except … that last one? Yeah, that one’s going down tonight.
According to The Guardian, Nirvana is reuniting for tonight’s massive “12-12-12″ Hurricane Sandy benefit concert at Madison Square Garden, with the part of Kurt Cobain being played by The Cute One himself: Sir Paul McCartney.
Says the Guardian:
The former Beatle will join Foo Fighters singer Dave Grohl and bassist Krist Novoselic on stage in New York to play a new song after secretly working with the pair. Grohl and Novoselic have not performed with each other for 20 years.
A spokesman confirmed that Grohl recently asked McCartney to come along to “jam with some mates”.
The former Beatle suggested they “just make something up” and found himself playing with Grohl on drums, bassist Novoselic and guitarist Pat Smear, who toured with Nirvana for the last six months of the band’s career.
McCartney said: “I didn’t really know who they were. They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said: ‘Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time?’
“And somebody whispered to me: ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.”
That’s a bizarre anecdote, no? How the hell did Macca not know he was jamming with the three surviving members of Nirvana? Nobody told him at any point? He just hopped on a plane to jam with Grohl, wound up in a room playing with Grohl, Smear, and the fairly distinctive-looking Krist Novoselic, and he still didn’t put it together until somebody told him afterward? I dunno, that scans like bullshit to me. Not to mention that the Guardian’s at least wrong about the 20 year gap: Novoselic guested on the last Foo Fighters LP and tour. Anyway, they’re playing a “new song,” which means Sir Paul doesn’t have to blow out his vocal chords on “Rape Me.”
That’s not all, of course; the stars will be out tonight: Along with performances from the Rolling Stones, Alicia Keys, Chris Martin, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Kanye West and Bon Jovi … Eddie Vedder will be duetting with Roger Waters on a Pink Flod song. Yep, weird one. You of course can watch it (and donate); get the deets here. Who knows, maybe Courtney will crash and this thing will really get crazy.
