Shut Up, Dude: This Week’s Best And Worst Comments

This week, in advance of Pearl Jam’s Brooklyn concerts, we ranked the alt-rock icons’ 10 best songs, interviewed Stone Gossard, and celebrated Vs.‘ 20th birthday. In three years those dudes can be nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, like Nirvana just were. In indier news of late, Neutral Milk Hotel reunited and Sufjan Stevens gave us a demo and grammar lesson. We also spoke with Best Coast, Charli XCX, Cass McCombs, the Dismemberment Plan, and Sky Ferreira, who discussed drugs and nipples. Of course it wouldn’t be Stereogum if we didn’t do half a dozen posts on the Reflektors. They also play Brooklyn tonight. This has been a message from DEATH GRIPS.

Cult’s Static may aim to please but so far that idea has worked for me. It’s catchy as hell and even though it’s not a huge leap forward from their debut it’s not similar enough to be reductive. The Is This It/Room On Fire comparison is apt but I don’t know how that’s a bad thing, I love Room On Fire, even moreso than Is This It.

Also I don’t take much stock in what Brian Oblivion says bc a) his last name is Oblivion and b) dude was on bath salts.

Dear my favorite Pearl Jam song–

I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be a star in somebody else’s list but whyyy whyyyyy whyyyyyyyyyy can’t it be—can’t it beeeeee Stereogum’s?

Of course Cults yearns for the days of pay-for-plays. They’ve no on-stage personality, little chemistry with each other as performers and write songs with the emotional resonance of a bad Judd Apatow movie. They’re exactly the kind of artists who need to be on a major label. Without the business savvy or engaging body of work to be culturally relevant, they depend on “smart people” to make them so.

How does a list of Pearl Jam’s ten best songs not include a single song from Ten?

I’m loving Stereogum’s broadening palette of diverse think pieces and have really been enjoying the recent think pieces (or whatever you call them).
Well written and a very well measured commentary on the strengths and weakness of each record. Metallica were once the most pioneering heavy metal band of the 80s and even though it may not be particularly cool to like them in some circles, there is absolutely no denying the power of records like ”Ride the Lightning” and especially the greatest heavy metal album of the 80s, ”Master of Puppets”. Do a think piece on Smashing Pumpkins records and you’ll make this fanboy a happy camper.

LOL, I just think music fans raised on the internet who want their rock stars to be fashion designers instead of heroin addicts is a large part of why there’s less good music being made these days.

I actually upvoted this, because this is awesome! I genuinely love your reaction!

Also, you used the term “self-aggrandize” which I’m a big fan of. Plus, you clearly just spent time reading some admittedly bullshit stuff that I wrote on the Internet and also took the time to copy/paste and all that, so I actually appreciate the effort! It’s way too easy to make people upset on the Internet, especially on music blogs, and even if you claim you’re not upset and I’m stupid and blah blah blah, you put some time in on that answer, plus you read some other ones, so I upvoted you cuz this shit genuinely made me laugh.

Also, the “our hero” thing…HAHAHAHA I love it.
