Jodie Abacus – “Space Buffalo” (Stereogum Premiere)

UK soul-pop merchant Jodie Abacus doesn’t have any albums in the works as of yet, but he certainly has some promising things on the horizon. He released the single “Halfway to Mexico” last fall and the smooth “Hot Kitchen” recently, and since then he’s been invited into the studio with Julio Bashmore. There is no telling what will come from those sessions, but it’s hard to imagine the results will be bad.

In the meantime, he proves why he’s gotten that invite in the first place with another solid offering. New single “Space Buffalo” opens with a bright synth work and claps before syncopated drum and whomping synth patterns lift Abacus’ soulful vocals. He sings “In this lonely league of love simply wondering what’s wrong with me” on the refrain, and despite its catchiness, it rings sincerely and somberly, striking an easy relatability. The song just feels good, though, so it’s discordant in a good way, making it that much more satisfying and heartwarming when it all resolves in the refrain “You’ll live to love another day.” This is a nice mood-lifter for a Monday. Check it out.
