PWR BTTM – “New Hampshire”

PWR BTTM – “New Hampshire”

PWR BTTM have taken a page out of the emo playbook and formed a habit of naming songs after places — “West Texas,” “House In Virginia” (well, sort of), “Sacramento,” and now “New Hampshire,” the second of two bonus tracks that will be included on the European vinyl reissue of their debut LP, Ugly Cherries. Maybe that location obsession is symptomatic of being on the road a lot (see the extensive list of tour dates below), or maybe it’s a side effect of always wanting to be somewhere besides the place that they are. Either way, “New Hampshire” is a gentle bit of self-eulogizing that recognizes none of us are too long for this world, but doesn’t seem too bothered by that fact: “Someday all the birds up in the sky will just die, oh well/ And the sun, it’ll burn out, oh well/ And you and I will die, oh well.” It culminates in a heartrending duet from Ben Hopkins and Liv Bruce that makes me feel like maybe death is but the next great adventure, as long as we make the most of the time we’re given. Listen below.

Here are both band members on the track:

“It’s a song about greener grass. I wrote it during a period of time where I hated where I lived and who I was there, and I just felt so helpless that like I figured whenever I did inevitably wither away the parties that be could ship me somewhere better. Reflecting on it, the hopelessness I felt was actually in me, and the place I was in or where I wanted to be couldn’t help things if I wasn’t willing to help myself first.” – Ben Hopkins

“New Hampshire was a song that I was immediately smitten with when Ben sent me the demo in Winter 2014. Something wasn’t right when we recorded it in the original Ugly Cherries session, and much to my dismay we eventually scrapped it. I’m so glad it worked out this time around and other people get to hear it.” – Liv Bruce
