In the early ’00s, Ashanti dominated R&B and pop radio with a series of breezy, chintzy, irresistible singles, many of them alongside Ja Rule. And since Ashanti doesn’t have any Fyre Festival-sized blots on her resume, it seems fair to say that she’s due for a comeback. Today, she’s attempting just that with the new single “Say Less.” And unfortunately, she’s trying it with the hot sound of four years ago, jumping on a DJ Mustard track alongside the omnipresent Ty Dolla $ign. “Say Less” honestly doesn’t sound much like an Ashanti song, but maybe it’ll lead to something.
