Shut Up, Dude: This Week’s Best Comments

This week the Rolling Stones held a livestream to reveal "Angry," the lead single from their first album of original songs in 18 years and their first collaboration with Sydney Sweeney. But the band's inaugural livestream happened over a decade before that. Since it's #fbf, enjoy this 1994 time capsule:

It’s great that another long time icon scored a number one hit on the Modern Rock chart as well as piercing the top 20 on the Hot 100. The bespectacled Elvis Costello may have been an odd figure on the pop chart but his unique musical stylings, voice and attitude fit in with whatever “new wave” was.

A very simple, poignant and powerful song this classic from Elvis Costello may be his most well known song to people who only have a passing knowledge of alternative music. I like the almost carnival basic track. The way the fanfare type horns and strings are layered onto the simple drums and pulsing bass is a great production trick. Costello has a great knack for conveying emotion with his vocals and he nails it here. I love how he uses the quiet/loud dynamic. Some may deride this as his sell out song but it’s firmly up there with his best work for me. 8.

I can't say I've thought about Steve Harwell often, but he's someone that is definitely embedded in my life. If you were born between 1985 and 1995 (and maybe later, because of the enduring popularity of Shrek?), you knew all the words to "All Star," whether you liked it or not. Personally, I liked it. And "Walkin' On the Sun" is a jam, too. R.I.P.

Well, shit, I was rather hoping my first #1 wouldn't have to come from a despair scream in that absolute shitbox of a comment section, but thanks for the upvotes indicating the vast majority of Gummers have a strong "fuck transphobes" position.Like @Skye Butchard said, it's been utter hell here on TERF Island these last few years - I'm actually still on a waitlist for my first consultation, having been referred in Feb 2020 - and I'm so tired of having to see people "just ask questions" about or outright argue against my (and other fellows trans/NBs [fun fact: non-binary isn't an official legally-recognised gender here in the UK!]) right to exist.

Smash Mouth singer Steve Harwell has passed away. "All Star" is a prime example of a non-Number One song whose impact far outdistances the majority of tracks that do hit the top. Some of us might not remember today's Britney song, but if someone starts the line "hey now..." we can finish the rest. Rest in peace Steve.

I see in the comment sections on this topic that people often think that merch cuts are because the venue sells your merch for you. Which is rarely the case, since touring acts usually have a merch person, tour manager, or a band member selling their own merch.

The merch cut is basically unexplainable. Venues/promoters think they are entitled to make more money from you because… they are hosting you or something. Or it’s a way to tax you for every dollar you make inside their venue. It’s criminal.

"Walkin' on the Sun" and "All Star" are all-timer tracks that anyone should be proud of having created. Rest in peace Steve.
