Aloha, Cale Parks. That the Aloha percussionist, pianist, vibraphonist, and solo singer/composer (etc) spent time as part of White Williams touring band is particularly apt regarding this video for Sparklace standout “Every Week Ends.” Parks shares a visual aesthetic with Wiliams, as well as a dusky post-new wave sound. That said, the drums are rawer, which pushes it somewhere else. The Adam Bennett and Parks-directed video is basically all Cale all the time, pinwheeling umbrellas, folding fabric, singing along, etc. It opens with the man banging drums in kaleidoscopic bug-vision, tousling his hair just so, and moving to the couch and into his role as smooth crooner. Parks kinda resembles George Michael with the five o’clock shadow and hoop earring, but the “Every Week Ends” has a cacophony and taut compositional complexity that takes it above a careless whisper. Sorry.
Remember to take a listen to “Some Sew, Some Find,” too.
Sparklace is out via Polyvinyl. Next month Parks is out on tour.
