19 People Killed At German Love Parade Music Festival

On Saturday 1.4 million people descended on Duisburg, Germany (population: 500,000) for the Love Parade electronic music festival, held in various cities including Mexico City, Oslo, Sydney, and San Fransisco. When word spread that they had closed admittance due to overcrowding, a crowd waiting to get in panicked and stampeded inside a Duisburg tunnel. According to the BBC, 19 people were killed and over 200 were injured after police and emergency workers had trouble getting to the victims because of traffic and crowded roads. This follows a similar riot and the death of a 15-year-old at L.A.’s Electric Daisy Carnival. According to the L.A. Times, the city is still investigating her death, while the L.A. Coliseum, where the event was held, considers banning all future raves from the venue. The organizers of Love Parade say that all future events have been canceled in respect of the victims. The German papers compared it to Pearl Jam’s headlining show at Denmark’s Roskilde Festival, where nine people died. The Telegraph has some footage of concertgoers trying to get out of the tunnel. Be careful out there, guys:
