Waves sounds so basic....I'm so so worried this shit is going to flop :( Please let WAVES stand for Winged Angels Versus Everything Sinful or something utterly batshit insane like that, please....
My grave prediction came through. But we have to ask: At what cost? Are we any better for having heard it? Is 2016 the end of anything ever making sense again? Will Kanye's cousin leak the laptop he stole? Will SWISH end up an AIRBALL? I NEED MORE ANSWERS, DAMMIT!
Have to hand it to B.o.B's marketing, this flat-earth album promo rollout is hilarious. Very timely with the election. Waiting on that obligatory follow-up Neil DeGrasse Tyson diss track, of course, because 2016 and why not.
Iggy, Macklemore & Talib have all made me nauseous in the past 3 years to be honest, each in their own special ways.
There is arguably no material you could use to feud with against Kendrick Lamar save for the fact that he's short. All we really need now in Canada is the authority of Trudeau's fresh faced Generation X perspective on rap's most rap-worthy rapper feud. Going for Drake, it'll be a tough first year for the Prime Minister.
"Swish upgraded from a brick quickfast." Kanye is more clutch than Paul Pierce and we should have known better to ever doubt that. My deepest and most selfest expectation from Kanye is that he's concealing a collaboration with Bowie on Swish, which can either end up being a sacreligious act in itself for having mentioned and thought of it, post-mortem, or an exultant final lap we would have the privilege to experience.
Yeah that might be one of his most head-ducking verses since the one about eating out an asian girl with sweet and sour sauce.
I've fallen for her voice ever since I saw her perform with Blood Orange on a stream. This upcoming album will probably make me wanna throw money at some live tickets this year.
Am I allowed to be disappointed? I'm disappointed.
Weak kickdrums on the remix, original still outshines this. Any Kelela news is good news though.
"Harlem rapper A$ASP Yams" Bad boo boo. Yams died earlier this year.
This is clearly a lowky diss track to Keith Ape.
both the artwork and the lyrics exceeded my expectations of Ferg and I sort of feel bad for it. this is really great tho.
If you're looking to observe any particular slice of subculture this year, take notice of the hip-hop dance studio communities around the world which foster this sort of "cultural appropriation" and creates something both utterly exhilarating and unifying.
I'm hopeful that Tom finds it in his end-of-year schedule to make a Top 20 kpop songs of 2015. And hopefully we all don't forget that f(x) - 4 Walls is at the top of that.
The comment equivalent of "crashing a party you weren't invited to, then announcing you're leaving when no one even knew you were there."
Notable OF moments in my life: Release of Yonkers video - I know every word. Unsure if it was a conscious decision. Jimmy Fallon performance - Mos Def yelling swag. The birth of swag and the consequential appropriation into the mainstream. It still hasn't gone away. SXSW performance - Hodgy standing on the large speakers. Arguably the first exhilarating online-video-streaming-being-a-thing I was involved in (besides Coachella 2011). Seeing OF live for the 1st time - Very cool experience. Seeing OF live for the 2nd time - Very big mistake.
Does Flesh Without Blood happen to be about Blood Diamonds? They used to be good friends before, but I haven't seen them together in awhile. Plus, doesn't he go by BLOOD now and collaborate with more mainstream artists now (ie. Skrillex)? This is a shot in the dark, tho.
I am really not fan of this at all.
Maybe I shouldn't have posted the actual link! Sorry!
As long as George Hill's hair remains Sisqo'd, it's very plausible!
All this Grimes talk just reminds me of my faithfully ironic reproduction of Genesis I made a couple years ago using dog and cat sounds. Funny how Stereogum never posted it. https://soundcloud.com/so_sleepy/genesis-meow-wuff-edition
I think we can expect a lengthy write-up by Tom about how great this Drake x Future mixtape is: 2 rappers on top of their game lost in the fame, sounding ruthless, cold and desolate as fuck, rapping for the sake of rapping and flexing. But from my standpoint, I agree with you that this is the first time I feel that Drake doesn't know how he's going to set up his next album. So he's just playing familiar sound. (As a preface, I am aware that this project was more of a spur of the moment thing that was made in 2 weeks; drake's online presence/notoriety just can't let this be the casual lowkey release he probably wanted it to be) In general, I feel like 2015 hip-hop mainstream has really peaked with this trapping 808's and skittering hi-hats bullshit. As much as I fairly enjoy it, at times it's like, "Where do we really go from here?". Even Kanye is having trouble with his musical vision this year.
After hearing their first two singles I was a bit worried for their new album. Til this beauty dropped. My world is now at peace again.
At least we got the turn up song of the summer (well, for me) in Antidote.
Wonder what Max Martin has cooking up for Tinashe. Ever since Can't Feel My Face, I'm all in for this pop mastermind dude.
Yeah, this thing is all sorts of amazing, from the Travis Scott-sounding cut in "The Usual" to the Washed Out collab with The Notebook sample. 2015 has been unbelievable I don't know how I'm gonna live with all of these albums coming at me.
I may never stop replaying In Time this week.
I've gone from flabbergasted to saddened over the course of its release that Unknown Mortal Orchestra's new album hasn't made any waves on the blogs I follow. From start to finish it's just so great :')
(Beach House - Depression Cherry being the album of the summer obviously)
It's not even a contest tbh. Kendrick Lamar - King Kunta. Seeing him perform this live was the nail in the coffin for me.
I like Dr. Dre's explanation only because it matches with the hypothesis already in my head all these years. To me, Dre always did feel overrated and "of the times". What I think is that maybe his production chops just didn't translate into bangers when 2010 and beyond came around. Lucky for him, he's likely horded enough rough Kendrick verses to last him 2 albums. Also, shoutout to Anderson Paak, which the world will soon be introduced to on a string of tracks on this album..
The first I heard this song all I could find myself saying is "I found my summer song, no, evvvvvveryone's summer song." Sadly, I'm already kinda tired of it.
I've listened to this twice through already and I'm honestly notttt that sold on it. I respect Chance for putting his homies on, but so far I don't see this growing on me too much. I probably would be more partial to an album with Chance's sole directorial lead, and maybe it was unfair that that was what I was expecting, but for now i'll wait.
Gaga does not suit this sound at all and I kinda hate the generic melody of the chorus. Kendrick, on the other hand, sounds vitalized on the verses.
