Album: Natalie Prass Song: "Billz" by Ava Luna
"It’s something that’s nice that happened. I guess I’ll have to go buy a suit." I love you Bill Withers. A no-brainer for the HOF. Questlove's book got me on to his mostly-forgotten 1974 album "'Justments," and I became obsessed with it for the better part of this year. From what I can tell, it should be considered one of the greatest R&B albums of all time, but for some reason it flew way below the radar.
Holy moly that song is beautiful! In Tall Buildings' self-titled debut was my 3rd-most-listened-to album of 2010 (after Age of Adz and the Suburbs) and I'm so excited to hear more from the talented Mr. Hall.
This is really really good. I'd even go so far as to call it a "tour de force." It's not easy to blend so many different vibes into such a cohesive and enjoyable tune. It's epic, chaotic, melodic, groovy and moving. Man. Also, for those of y'all who aren't jazz nerds, the Maria Schneider Orchestra is like the Arcade Fire of jazz big bands -- pretty much as good as it gets nowadays. I've seen them live twice and both shows were amazing and beautiful. Really cool that Bowie tapped them for this collaboration.

Beautiful video and great song. Tony Allen's groove should somehow be preserved for posterity in the Smithsonian.
Would expect nothing less from Eric Andre.
Whoops, this mash-up pretty much proves that the songs aren't alike at all. Blurred Lines is literally two chords: 4 bars of the I chord, 4 bars of the V chord, over and over again. Got to Give It Up goes I for 8 bars, then IV - V - I - II 2X. Other than the fact that they both have a cowbell and a nice medium tempo groove, I don't see how there's any argument of infringement.
A friend of mine visited Harvard in 2005 and ended up eating dinner with Rivers in the dorm dining hall. He reported that Rivers was shy and awkward. And that he was a thirtysomething rock star eating in a college dorm dining hall.
Yes! Saw these dudes live recently and they were amazing. Also, Adam Schatz' "zombie jazz" band Father Figures is awesome and puts on a mind-blowing live show. Aaaand Landlady/Father Figures drummer Ian Chang plays with Son Lux and Matthew Dear and is incredible.

Yeah I've always thought that Age of Adz was up there with the Sistine Chapel and Don Quixote as one of the greatest artistic achievements in human history, but y'know, different strokes.
Yes, finally Ava Luna got some ink on Sgum! They're one of my favorite bands, I've seen them live twice, and they put on one of the best shows I've ever seen. This cover is fun but only reveals about 7% of AL's full awesomeness. Seriously, check these bros and chicks out.
Has there ever been another band with the honor of being called "skronk-pop tinkerers"?
Wow, I just got engaged last week, so this article couldn't have been better-timed. I guess we'd better find a solid bassist and start making some music.
Sounds like a plan! I'll look for the cat and you'll look for the Mario Paint screen-cap.
Happy to see Angel Olsen and Matthew E White on the Honorable Mentions list. Angel lives in my neighborhood and was at my band's show last week and told some people she really liked us so yeah I felt pretty cool about that.
That might be true. It's like, "big deal, Deerhoof did it again." And yeah, I'm surprised Swing Lo Magellan wasn't top-10 or top-5 even. But then why does Beach House get so much recognition for doing the same old [boring] thing?
