It's gotta be pointed out that his shows are regularly ~38 songs long. That is insane! And of course he's going to sprinkle in some Wings/solo stuff, this is a Paul McCartney concert, not a Beatles concert. It's great that he has such an extensive back catalog he can pull from, but as has been said, the man is 73 years old and for him to be able to remember and rehearse just those 38 songs to the point where they can comfortably be played live is amazing. This is an age where some more youthful bands are playing the exact same 14-song set all tour long. Respect.
Does anyone follow Martin Shkreli on Twitter that isn't in the media?
How have you never finished a whole episode? They're, like, 15 minutes. :)
"If I hand you $2 million, fucking show me some respect." You can buy a lot of things in life, like hot dogs or a Wu-tang album of which only one physical copy exists. But respect is not one of those things.
I did a very extensive run through of Apple Music... I tried to figure out how to make a playlist, gave up after 5 minutes and returned to Spotify.
Was just about to say this. I don't know how long she played with them but she was a natural fit, and she was there for the last good Pumpkins gig: http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/the-smashing-pumpkins/2008/aragon-ballroom-chicago-il-43d6c3c7.html
I love this performance. So much energy. This is when the other late night shows stuck with safer, commercially successful artists while Conan was carving out a niche by featuring relative unknowns like MMJ and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, etc. The other shows have caught up some in that regard lately, but Conan still strikes me as the music nerd of the group. He does not reign in his enthusiasm at all: "I am DEFINITELY going to buy that record!"
It's already #1 on Rolling Stone's Top 50 Albums of 2016
So the big question: does my alumni.nd.edu e-mail account get me 50% off?
I guess it could theoretically be more than that... if 100,000 of the 500,000 WiMP subscribers abandoned the platform when it as acquired and merged into Tidal, they would be able to claim 370,000 new subscribers. Also the banner on the bottom of this Stereogum page is an ad for Jay-Z's B-sides concert for Tidal subscribers, and I find that funny.
"The Dead performing as Mayer's back-up band" would put a different spin on the Fare Thee Well shows in the same way that LCD Soundsystem's epic last show at MSG was undermined by James Murphy soundtracking NYC subway turnstiles.
Absurd, yes, but I guess no more absurd than taxpayers money being used to fund NFL stadiums for professional teams owned by gazillionaires.
So it's the old Guitar Hero with two less buttons?
Am I the only one who read the headline and thought it was a joke about Madonna performing a song called "Bitch I'm Madonna" being unintentionally funny? I mean, I've caught myself chuckling at pretty much everything she's tried to do to promote this album (the Grammys, the "cape" malfunction, having a song called "Bitch I'm Madonna") so I was caught a little off guard when I scrolled down and saw, no, she actually literally is doing stand-up comedy...
Those deals will kill streaming services collectively. No one is going to pay double or triple their monthly subscription fee for a handful of additional artists, and no one is going to want to have to assemble different playlists containing different artists to choose from over multiple services. The solution? Go back to stealing music.
It'll be Album of the Week. If something makes AotW they don't pick it for Premature Evaluation (which went to the new Modest Mouse)
If Mellow Gold is your 8th best record, that is a sign that you are doing things right...
Agree to disagree, but I am strictly on the side of listening to an interview with Alex Turner over drinking petrol straight from the nozzel in a garage.
This is so back-assward. YouTube needs artists/content creators. Not the other way around.
This list is why I don't listen to Pandora. People like songs like these, and the algorithm figures other people, like me, might like them. No, Pandora. I don't like them.
Hard to Handle is a cover. Invalid list.
I get the "jam bands" stereotype. Most of them aren't that interesting. But these guys musically are light years ahead of bands like String Cheese Incident, moe., etc. If you're the type of person who doesn't need Pitchfork to validate everything before you listen to it, I would recommend checking them out.
BitTorrent has been around for over a decade, so kudos for knowing that, but I think the groundbreaking part lies in using it to show that the "Where it needs to go from here" in this comic is indeed possible: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/music_industry
It's like a musical version of the childhood game "Telephone," only instead of a message getting more and more distorted as it gets passed down the line, it's a song based on a single piano riff getting shittier and shittier as it gets recycled.
Interesting. What you call a "hero" I call a "complete and utter shitbag."
Very glad to see Certain Romance #1 on the list... why do they not play this live anymore??? Crying Lightning is a close 2nd. I'll give some love to "Pretty Visitors" because it hasn't been mentioned yet in the comments. "Temptation Greets You Like Your Naughty Friend" is a pretty awesome B-side, and I like "Arabella" off the new one. Not to say that any of these were snubbed from the Top 10 list, which are all great. Just that they deserve honorable mention.
The National is from Cincinnati but based in Brooklyn, right? And they happen to be quite chummy with the Arcade Fire crew...
That's a lot to pay considering you don't even get to play real instruments.
"he probably needs to get the fuck out of here with that comparison, don’t you think?" Most unnecessary probably OF ALL TIME.
I was shocked not to find the Vampire Weekend version on here, until I googled it and realized that "I'm Going Down" is the Boss song that they cover. Most of Mr. Springsteen's catalog runs together for me...
The way they sell out the tickets and then release their lineup a day later basically says that they want festival goers to not give a shit about the music. What's disappointing is that quite a few halfway decent midcard acts that I would like to check out will count this as their Chicago visit.
Give me Smile Like You Mean It and For Reasons Unknown please
I don't disagree with anything you said, but I think one of the big benefits of Spotify you miss is that it makes it makes it a lot easier for people to discover new music. When anyone with an internet connection and a Facebook account can listen to any song they want for free and get suggestions from friends and other people with similar taste, it can help artists reach an audience that the traditional model wouldn't have. This benefits the artists who don't get played over and over again on the radio. I've discovered many artists this way; I may have stumbled upon them eventually but Spotify made it easier. This has lead to me buying concert tickets and even records that I likely wouldn't have without the service.
What they are saying is Spotify doesn't pay a specified amount per stream, they pay based on the artists percentage of the total overall streams. Those two are different... say you increase your streams from 1M to 2M. Under the pay-per-stream method you would get twice as much in royalties. But under the percentage model, if every other artist also doubled their streams, but Spotify's total revenue didn't double, you would end up with less than twice as much.
I could tell while reading through the list that it was building up to Corduroy as #1. No arguments there. Black and State of Love and Trust belong there. I guess I'll have to forgive you for those omissions since the "Rockabye Baby" compilations weren't out yet in the early 90's. Release is a personal favorite. Elderly Woman... would make my list for sure. Red Mosquito. Footsteps. This band is great because three different "types" of Pearl Jam fans (none superior to the other) could come up with three completely different lists.
The only song from Wincing to make this list isn't one I particularly care for. It is a decent song, but there are so many more amazing songs on that album.
