lol. there are not 21 better songwriters currently active than a creatively reinvigorated Bob Dylan, whose album you would've had probably a couple of days to listen to before compiling this. like, I like Jason Isbell enough, but I don't think his best material is really comparable to fired-up Dylan as singer-songwritery type stuff goes.
Lol yeah there are no legit reasons to dislike Hillary Clinton and anything to the left of her is "ideological fundamentalism". Drone strikes are totes fleek.
I am touched that Killer Mike also seems to hate Margaret Thatcher.
Thought Kanye might've gone Republican with his praise for Ben Carson so this is good! Maybe with all his talk about "this new thing called classism" (ahem, "new") he'll eventually come out as a Sanders supporter. But yeah would be dope to hear some SWISH jams!
God the world of sensitive indie singer-songwriters is a fucking surreal place right now. You've got Ryan Adams covering Taylor Swift sincerely, Father John Misty covering Ryan Adams covering Taylor Swift as Lou Reed ironically and Mark Kozelek writing songs called “The Ottawa Blues Fest Is Run By Inbreds”.
Would be nice if the government did as much to prevent poverty and homelessness as they have done Tyler entering the UK.
I was more sort of agreeing with him that maybe he's in fact less liberal than he previously thought. I mean, "liberal" is a pretty broad thing.
Really moving piece. Patterson Hood has such a good feel for the social history of the south - his songs are so narratively rich and steeped in history (plus they rock pretty hard). Fuck the confederate flag and long live the Truckers, who show that the south can be a beautiful place.
When he talks about homeless people there he sounds less like a "liberal" than Ronald fucking Reagan. Maybe it's just because the last five years have seen homelessness rise by a third 'round my way (the UK) and dickhead businessmen put spikes outside their workplaces to keep homeless people from sleeping there, but I can't say I've got much patience for the whole "it's those human turds' own fault for fucking up their lives" thing. Let's hope his drug dealer mates can continue to pay the rent, or he might start to get a sense of the human reality of homelessness.
I think you're right that the ideal setlist lies somewhere between those two poles. Mainly, though, especially with a "current" artist like Kendrick, I'd want to see the artist where they are at a particular point in time, particularly if their new record was great. You don't wanna go and see one of the most interesting artists of 2015 and get a set they more or less could've played in 2012.
Don't mind a bit of wilful perversity when artists refuse to play the OLD stuff (someone here mentioned Neil Young...) but it seems bizarre that he wouldn't wanna centre his set around his new material, which he's seemed very proud of before (and bloody well should be.) He's got a couple of albums and some mixtapes and a load of features but not exactly *that* extensive a back catalogue; I'd make the case that said catalogue has been steadily improving and, whilst Good Kid was a more crowd-friendly album, seems a shame not to play some of his dopest stuff.
"This is the sound of money, success, power." Oh, really? Shame I'm not a right-wing free-market capitalist, then. If Donald Trump started putting out records Stereogum would be on 'em like flies to shit. No disrespect to Hit-Boy as a producer. 1Train is an incredible beat. But I'm getting kind of sick of this Republican Party, Conservative Party "don't wanna be famous/I just wanna be rich" shit being valorised by erudite musical thinkers because we wanna get to the fire beats.
There seemed to be no reason or rhyme to the censorship. It seemed to be like "he just mentioned Chi-Town! Fuck! What if he says the n-word in a minute? Better mute this whole verse just in case."
Good point here. When Dylan was invited to the White House I didn't hear Fox News going up in arms screaming "this despicable revolutionary communist scumbag defended KNOWN MURDERERS!!!" Yet, Obama invited Common up and Bill O'Reilly had a fucking aneurism. I mean, Jesus. He's a respectable artist! Not DMX or something (no disrespect, DMX - I'm not sure you've ever claimed to be "respectable".) To use the O'Reilly parlance, is the only way right-wing "pinheads" know about him through that one song from 15 years ago? On the bright side, I suppose he should be reasonably proud that a political track of his continues to irk the establishment.
Pretty dope. A lot like the studio version, though, just sparer. Guess Mick & Keef couldn't be bothered to turn some old demos from the sessions into new songs this time. Shame, but can't begrudge them it. The Exile & Some Girls reissues were good packages, loads of music to dig into it. The good kind of back catalogue-milking.
“What is troubling here is that a state university that is subsidized with state taxpayer funds, is once again being questioned on their decision-making at the highest levels,” he said before walking out into the street and shooting an unarmed black person. (Posted this exact same comment on Stereogum's Facebook, but I just think it's an unbelievable hypocrisy for police to complain that taxes are being misspent giving a voice to somebody who dares to question their authority.)
yeah, "wilding" as in "I'm 'bout to wild the fuck out." (New Slaves)
see, this kind of thing is why it can be rather hard for us anti-capitalist types to get on the poptimistic bandwagon. corporate as hell.
