Just listened to this and am amazed at how much I hate it. Reminds me of the separation I felt with Koz and his music upon listening to Benji. Haven't liked a thing he's done since then. Weird because I LOVE everything he did pre-Benji.
It's pretty telling how spot on the title of this article is when over a third of the comments on an article about 10,000 Maniacs are about R.E.M.
That said, Our Time In Eden is still an absolutely beautiful album. Was just listening to it last night, funny enough. Good write up.
In fact, if I had to:
Automatic
Darklands/Psychocandy (tie)
Stoned & Dethroned
Barbed Wire Kisses--- These two aren't proper
Sound of Speed------- 'albums' but I count them as such.
Honeys Dead
Munki
I started with Automatic too, and it's probably still my favorite by them. I dare anyone to go driving fast, play 'Between Planets' and not absolutely lose your shit. I didn't care for Munki but I'm still giving this a go just because it's the Mary Chain.
So I've been thinking about this since last night. The way I see it, in 2016 we lost David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, and Prince, among others. In 2017 we get the "Cash Me Ousside" girl. So the universe is at least *trying* to make it up to us.
Sorry, here I am proofreading and everything. Skip over Occupied. It really doesn't go anywhere for me, though I am appreciating it more and more. Every song before it is brilliant.
I liked how they reworked Death to Fascism into the opening track instantly, but all the others took time for me. Guess that's music for you. Still have to force myself to not skip though Occupied, and that song's been out over a year now. But I love how they continue evolving as a band.
A word of caution: Don't go into the new Radio Dept. expecting dream pop or Clinging to a Scheme Pt. 2. It's a much different album, and one I was disappointed in at first. Takes some effort but after a lot of repeats, it's one of my favourites by them. I'm getting a decidedly awesome 90s vibe from it, with 2016 political threads woven in.
