It could be as simple and unexciting as his work visa not getting approved/deferred with a request for further information. There has been a rash of this happening in the last few months; it happened to Kevin Drew. The people in charge of examining these things have really tightened their belt and set some unreasonable standards if their case isn't completely comprehensive.
John Mayer & Imagine Dragons are great headliners because then we can all go home early and beat the traffic. Thx Jay <3
no one's addressing the scarcity of opportunity for trans actors factor here everyone's just acting like this is a "don't sit at my lunch table" type of deal sigh
It's also a question of opportunity; a trans actor rarely if ever gets to play anything but a trans person but a handsome straight male will get to play anything under the sun. So if there's just a limited amount of trans characters *in general* it would be really swell to give a deserving trans actor some of that light.
So weird to have my Videogum in my Stereogum. Excited* to see how the two commenting communities mix.
>But if I really am all those things, how can I have these guys in my group? Wouldn't everybody leave? But people like crazy stories. Like ... 4 guys?
Listen, man, you can't hold him accountable for that, he's just a conduit for imagination and free flowing words and creativity, it's just the magic that comes out of him, you know?
When earnest people express disapproval because they are hurt, even if you disagree with them, the absolute most obnoxious course of action is to double down on it.
Dear everyone backlashing to the backlash: The problem is not criticism of hypersexualization or that these people are beyond criticism, it's about the way her WORDING reinforces anti-slut thinking. If she had used the words, "I disagree with the hypersexualization to sell a song when the song stands by itself," it wouldn't have been a blip, but "she looks like a slut" is the type of judgment that is pervasive in western culture that tells us if a woman is into sex she is a bad person and should be shamed.
More Q than Stereogum, I think. Also think Wayman still deserves a good portion of the blame for poorly explaining herself -- I don't think context can change "she looks like a slut" it's still an annoying sex negative judgment to make. I know she meant in the mind of her mind that she disagreed with a specific choice in a specific song, but we can only judge you by the words you actually say.
Hey man. I like my Everything Machine. It's how I discovered all this cool Monsters of Folk music.
Jay buys Major League Lacrosse, institutes new no-contact rules
"I've been punched by ALL KINDS of races" is like an inverse "one of my best friends is black" it's pretty crazy
They could salvage this by converting it into a Daniel Bryan statue.
I only posted like 20 times in the 3 (or 4?) years I've been reading Videogum. Just wanted to be part of this thread/moment/endofanera.
let's let's start a mailing list?
I really like FYF as a sort of Coachella overflow. Coachella acts as the tentpole and they seem to be a little more bold with FYF, especially since they don't have the pressure of having a mass appeal headliner. They can run Beirut or The Descendents and it will still sell out.
In that excerpt, Hamilton sounds like a guy that has successfully googled "Basketball"
I was going to say, he's like a college student that thinks he's more creative than he actually is. Go to any "Intro to Creative Wriiting" class and you'll see 25 out of 30 kids who think the process of coming up with an idea or a joke or a character is copying it from somewhere else.
Is it possible that this Walters requested to be left out so they diminished his role in future versions?
I am confused as to what was your overall plan. Mayberry wrote about the online messages she gets and you saw this as an opportunity to "point how how extremely black and white the entire issue has become"? As if someone in this post was telling you to stop saying a girl is attractive and that made you feel bad?
If you can murder your contemporaries through songwriting in folk music the way you can in rap music then yeah Sun Kil Moon is murdering step it up cass mccombs
Also I like how misogyny is passable but misinterpreting the film's meaning is fucked up. Also speaking out against the concept of labels is way less noble than speaking out against the prison industrial complex.
I like The Stand Ins more than The Stage Names because I'm crazy like that
Looking forward to their rebranding as a restaurant that's an asshole to you on purpose. They can have people in big mascot-style Amy suits and have a show every hour where they berate some actors posing as waitresses in a musical number.
o o o (Nickelback lyrics.)
Is it just me or are bands exploding at a faster rate these days
Yet it's being characterized in the mainstream media that all Deen did was say a naughty word once when she got mugged in the 80s.
No one show him the In Rainbows track listing
I don't think it's that no one should talk to these guys, just that when they do, they ought to ask the tough, specific questions. So much of the Pythons press has this fear of making JP feel and handling him like a delicate flower. Which I guess makes sense if your aim is to be polite, but how are we going to "make up our own minds" when the language is so lawyered and all they ever say is "I was never charged" and "it's complicated"? How about instead of asking how he's dealing with all this negative energy being hurled upon him, ask him what parts of the police report are false? How are we supposed to interpret observed bruises & abrasions on both parties? Maybe you'll say it's none of our business, but that never stops anything else in the rumor mill, and also someone seems to want to make it business with a PR campaign.
Because as we all know the only reason this album will go platinum is because it made a single reference to Nirvana.
The Superman reboot in 2035 is gonna be so good though
Good list, I appreciate that you went for some of the non-LP tracks. Most of these would make my top 10, though not in this order.
I would have no problem with rich people using Kickstarter if, as bankrollers & producers, backers got a cut of the profit proportional to how much they chipped in.
Anyone with mystery will eventually reach a critical mass of hype and popularity. Basically he dropped one song, a lot of people liked it a lot. "Who is this guy?" "Has he got anything else?" "Is he coming out with something?" Silence. Then time passes, he drops another track, and everyone likes it a lot too. But still no concrete details about what he's going to do. This is the first time we've heard anything full, like finally opening the door after gazing through a keyhole.
I always assumed those Obama/Richardson photos were Photoshops because come on it's the goddam President, but this post prompted me to do some research and it turns out they're real! But they're from 2007, when Vibe magazine commissioned Richardson to do the photoshoot for their cover story. Same story as Louis CK, I guess. It's not like everyone saying, "Hey can you get me that American Apparel photographer that has a really uncomfortable history with sexual harassment?" Magazines just love using the dude.
