The Academy has selected 63 songs that will contend for Best Song nominations for next year’s ceremony, and among them are songs not written by Randy Newman. Paul McCartney and U2 — “you may have heard of them” — both made the cut, of course. But dark horse Jarvis/”Petey” has a shot too. That movie is fantastic. (Get it? You get it.) A maximum of two songs can be nominated from any one film, so maybe one of you can explain why Twilight: New Moon has only Lykke in the running…

According to the rules:

“To be eligible, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film. A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.”

We’re not Academy voters (YET), but maybe if we will it to happen, hosts Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin will be introducing a live performance of one of these on 3/7…

…if not Karen O and the Kids. Too bad Oscar always favors the old dogs.

    Well…it’s like Morrisey said yesterday…

That Karen O song sounds too much like Moonlight Mile by the Stones to be considered “original”. But whatever, I’m old.

One of those great great early songs with the 70′s strings before everyone went overboard with it…

  3. That terrible Avatar song (“My Heart Will Go On Even Longer”) is probably going to win.

  4. As a Videogummer, my ideal shortlist obviously includes “The Word Is Love” from “Oy Vey! My Son Is Gay!,” “Na Na” from “Couples Retreat”, * “Possibility” from “The Twilight Saga: New Moon”, “New Divide” from “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”, “You’ve Been a Friend to Me” from “Old Dogs”, and something from the Hannah Montana movie. Duh.

  5. Does this mean there will be 10 musical performances at the Oscars this year? Oh, wow. I am never watching it.

no Thom Yorke for “Hearing Damage”?

  8. Well, there’s your Miley Cyrus, so maybe you can stop worrying about her. ;o)

  9. Youssou N’Dour! Oh man, if he gets nominated, he’ll perform on the Oscars. That is the best thing I have heard all week.
