Sufjan Stevens - Silver & Gold

It’s been rumored for a minute, but Sufjan Stevens has now officially announced that he’ll release another of his gargantuan Christmas music box sets next month. This one is called Silver & Gold: Songs For Christmas, and it includes 58 songs spread across five EPs, which comprise entries 6-10 in his years-running Songs For Christmas series. The National’s Aaron and Bryce Dessner and Arcade Fire’s Richard Reed Parry are among the contributors this time around.

The physical version of the box set will include a pretty ridiculous array of goodies, including temporary tattoos, a coloring book (check out a page below), an ornament, a poster, lyrics and sheet music, and Sufjan’s own psychedelic art. And Sufjan has also made public the last song on the set: A 12-minute epic called “Christmas Unicorn,” a bittersweet bit of personification that interrogates the very idea of Christmas while piling on the orchestral instrumentation and interpolating a bit of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart.” Listen below.

Silver & Gold: Songs For Christmas is out 11/13 on Asthmatic Kitty. You’ll find more details at its Bandcamp page.

    • 1) Kitty Pryde is probably a liar that was making a joke when she claimed to have recorded a Christmas song with Sufjan.

      2) If she was telling the truth we will have to wait another 5 years to find out, because this collection of Christmas music was recorded from 2006 to 2010. So, anything recorded earlier this year will not be on it.

  2. December tour announcement imminent?

  3. Was gonna say NOPE but… maybe YEP? Ridiculousness is not always bad.

  4. Since the Age of Adz.. I guess every song needs to be 12+ minutes now. :)

Anyways, love the song. Shaun Apple

This seams like a dream. I never thought I would see this day. So tempted to get the vinyl.

  6. Im pumped for this. The first box set is a masterpiece. For those who saw him in 2006 when he released the first box set, obviously he had released Illinois the year before, did he do a christmas tour? I’d love to see him on tour, in december, doing an all christmas box set tour. Did he do that in 2006? Would be awesome to see him perform Holy Holy Holy or This Was the Worst Christmas Ever.

  7. even though its not officially a christmas album, ive always felt Seven Swans works well during that time of the year. Dusting off the box set is always a highlight of the christmas season. I cant wait to listen to the old one and the 58 new songs on the new box

  8. All the cover art in this set is absolutely brilliant! Will have to get physical copies.
Love the song. Pretty excited about this.
