The National on Fallon

Last night on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, the National were the musical guests, and they used the opportunity to play a couple of new songs from their forthcoming album Trouble Will Find Me, songs that we haven’t heard in their final form yet. On the show proper, they played the grand, slow-swelling “Sea Of Love.” And as on online bonus, they also did the tender, hushed, horn-laced “I Need My Girl.” During the rest of the show, the band’s twin brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner also sat in with the Roots, but those videos haven’t surfaced online yet. Watch the two full performances below.

Trouble Will Find Me is out 5/21 on 4AD.

  1. “Sea of Love,” wow, this song is MASSIVE

  2. I can’t think of anyone better at putting big drums in a quiet song than Bryan Devendorf.

  3. WHAT?! I live in Canada and I can watch these? YAAAAY! The National are magical!

  4. wow “I need my girl” is eargasmic

  5. I Need My Girl is great, but um, isn’t that the exact riff that closes out Sufjan’s “Impossible Soul”?

    • They’ve accidentally stolen from Sufjan before (the chord progression from conversation 16 is the same as sister winter). However, the Dessners played the guitar parts for the end of “Impossible Soul”, so I imagine they were aware that it’s pretty similar…

  6. I Need My Girl reminds me of East of Eden…AND I DON’T KNOW WHY

  7. how many times, can one band, write the same song. how many times, can one band, write the same song. how many times, can one band, write the same song. how many times, can one band, write the same song.
