Calexico - Maybe On Monday

Last year, the dusky Arizona roots-rock band Calexico released their album Algiers, and on their new Maybe On Monday EP, the band includes a couple of different versions of the title track, which originally appeared on Algiers. The meat of the new EP, though, is covers. It includes Calexico’s takes on songs from Elvis Costello and the Call, as well as a version of the Replacement’s classic confusion anthem “Unsatisfied.” In Calexico’s hands, it’s more of a rambling shrug. Listen to their cover of the song here, and stream the whole cover EP here.

Maybe On Monday is out digitally now on City Slang, and the physical edition will be available only at dates on the band’s forthcoming European tour.

  1. Lovely rendition, but it feels less genuine with the absence of Paul Westerberg’s urgency and angst.

  2. Agreed; it’s not a bad cover by any measure, but lacks that authenticity found in the original.
