Okkervil River - The Silver Gymnsium

Texan rock band Okkervil River return in a few months with the new album The Silver Gymnasium, and we’ve already posted the lyric video for first single “It Was My Season.” The album is a sort of tribute to Meridian, New Hampshire, the town where frontman Will Sheff lived as a kid, and of Sheff’s childhood memories of that town. Longtime Okkervil River cover artist Will Schaff (who, despite having almost the exact same name, is a completely different person from Sheff) made a gatefold map for the album, and a new video pairs “Lido Pier Suicide Car,” a lush instrumental from the album, with Schaff’s art. Check it out below.

The Silver Gymnasium is out 9/3 on ATO.

  1. This band always has the best cover art.

    • You should check out William Schaff’s other artwork then. I follow him on a few social media sites and he also happens to do artwork for a number of others bands as well as having a “print of the month” club. I recently picked up a set of playing cards he designed that are absolutely gorgeous.

      • I don’t follow him on any sites, but I find myself on his flickr every couple of months! I’ve always contemplated getting a tattoo of some of his art with okkervil, but it hasn’t happened yet.

  2. This album (so far) reminds me a lot of Orion Town by Frontier Ruckus. I’m really excited that they are writing songs that are more personal/nostalgic. If this instrumental and It Was My Season are any indication, I would say that this could easily become my favorite Okkervil River album.
