Liz Phair and Art Alexakis

Liz Phair and Everclear both hit their creative and commercial peaks in the ’90s, but the two occupied vastly different ends of the alt-rock spectrum. And so it’s kind of hilarious to see a press release claiming that the two have “finally” teamed up, as if the world had spent years wondering when these two would find each other. But yes, it’s finally happened: Phair and Everclear frontman Art Alexakis have recorded a duet version of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land” for the soundtrack of the forthcoming documentary Farmland, director James Moll’s look at the profession of farming. The movie is in theaters 5/1. And if this leads to a larger collaboration, I may have to swim out past the breakers and watch the world die.

  1. Wow, still with the peroxide hair and soul patch, huh? Alright…

These faded alt-pop star collabs (another that comes to mind is Juliana Hatfield teaming with the guy from Nada Surf) are sad to watch in the same way it’s sad to see two townies you went to high school with exhaust all of their dating pool options and finally just settle for each other.

  2. ” but the two occupied vastly different ends of the alt-rock spectrum.”

Yeah one was at the safe middle of the road end and the other was at the middle of the road safe end.
