Billy Corgan and Tommy Lee

The list of drummers on this planet capable of hitting their instrument as hard and as accurately as Jimmy Chamberlin is a short one. Whatever your feelings about him, Mötley Crüe’s Tommy Lee is on it. But he is also the sort of person who is willing to appear in public looking like this. So we should probably expect some blowback from the news that Lee is playing drums on the forthcoming Smashing Pumpkins album Monuments To An Elegy. Monuments is one of two Pumpkins albums that Corgan is planning to release next year, and last night, he posted the above photo of him and Lee in the studio together, adding this: “Just finished round 1 of tracking drums with Tommy Lee for the new the Smashing Pumpkins album. Shockla-locka-boom. Yes, that T Lee for all 9 songs of ’Monument To An Elegy.’” Shocka-locka-boom.

  1. Tommy Lee is a walking STD.

  2. and yet no word about the status of mike byrne. awkward.

    • It’s a shame too. He wasn’t Jimmy Chamberlain, but the dude did back-up singing, and they performed this awesome cover of Black Diamond by Kiss on tour, with Mike Byrne singing.

  3. curious about what’s up with their current drummer (and bassist for that matter), since billy gushed endlessly how happy he was with them. i know they have other bands, so maybe it’s just that.
there’s also a part of me that just hopes this opens the door for Jimmy Chamberlin and maybe Melissa Auf Der Maur back into the live band… at least then the lineup would be 3/4 of what it was before the first breakup.

anyway, as long as the drums are good and the songs are good, it’ll be fine. it’s just… “Wow, Tommy Lee!???”

  4. WAIT! Does this mean the end of Methods of Mayhem? Say it ain’t so!

  5. HAH, instead of looking at it like, “Why is Billy devaluing himself with Tommy Lee,” just maybe it’ll be more like, “Whoa, Tommy Lee actually got involved in something pretty good!”

Unless it sucks. I’ll refrain from judging till i hear it.

Oh, then remember that Trent Reznor had Tommy Lee on the Downward Spiral… unless that was a joke?

  6. The Pumpkins and the Crue are both on my list of all-time favourite bands – needless to say, I’m excited about this!
