Grimes & Jay-Z At Roc Nation Pre-GRAMMY Brunch Presented By MAC

On Friday night, Grimes will play New York’s Governors Ball festival. And as she pointed out on Twitter this afternoon, we might want to pay special attention to the last song of her set. The song, Grimes explains, is “kinda different from regular grimes.” That’s because she and frequent collaborator Blood Diamonds wrote the song for Rihanna, only taking it back when “they turned it down.” So it should be pretty fucking fascinating to hear what Grimes’ version of a Rihanna song would be. Grimes and Rihanna both share a management team, Roc Nation, and it’s too bad Rihanna’s people decided not to use the song. Also of note: Grimes says, also on Twitter, that her Governors Ball set will have three new songs (including that Rihanna one) and that she and her crew have “re recorded and reproduced all the old visions songs too so they are much better now.”

I hope her version of “better” doesn’t include Jay Z rapping on any of them

  2. “It’s too bad Rihanna’s people decided not to use the song.”

That’s a strange thing to say without even hearing the song. #JayZDaftPunk #neverforget

    • Fair. But for those of us who are Grimes fans, the profile boost she’d get after writing for Rihanna, and the opportunity to hear even a watered-down version of her beats on radio, would be pretty exciting even if the song was not great. As someone who finds most Rihanna songs to fall somewhere between acceptable and awful, I would take an acceptable/awful song that sounded kind of like Grimes.

  3. Grimes is obviously a fan of pop music and pop musicians, so she probably has some emotion/energy invested in being able to write stuff for that world and have it be accepted. I could see Grimes eventually being sort of like Sia in that way.

  4. I lol’d at the “grimes of tarth” twitter name. That’s great.

Grimes has professed her love of Rihanna’s music before; IIRC, she included “We Found Love” and “Only Girl” on her list of “best songs ever” that she posted on Tumblr a couple of months ago. I can’t imagine how exciting it must be to produce for one of your favorite artists (even if they do end up turning it down).

GAH, I want to hear this song! x__x
