Karen O - "Rapt" video

Yeah Yeah Yeahs leader Karen O is going to release Crush Songs, her first-ever solo album, in a couple of months, and this morning marks the first time we get to hear anything from it. First single “Rapt” is a short, skeletal, lo-fi acoustic number, the sort of thing that could almost serve as a drawn-out intro to a Yeah Yeah Yeahs song. And its dreamlike new video, directed by Karen’s husband Barney Clay, is made up entirely of shots of Karen floating underwater, with her makeup somehow remaining immaculate. Karen’s Stop The Virgens collaborator, the Oscar-nominated production designer K.K. Barrett, also worked on the video. Check it out below.

Crush Songs is out 9/9 on Cult Records.

  1. Does anybody else remember Native Korean Rock? The little one-off solo project Karen O did a year or so after Show Your Bones was released? It basically only existed in the form of a poorly-maintained MySpace page that featured six or so songs, but this was definitely one of them. I wonder if the rest of those songs have made it onto Crush Songs. They had names like “OOO” and “Beast” and I think she also did a cover of The Doors’ “Indian Summer”.

  2. Yeah I was stoked about her solo record until it became pretty obvious that it’s not new material.

  3. This is exactly what I expected. And bearing in mind YYY’s ‘new material’ was the monstrosity that was Mosquito, I’m fine with this.
